C4 could have been worse, but to be fair we dont know how the rest of the night rated

Superb night for BBC Two - in particular, for The Night Watch, which really benefitted from a lack of competition. The investment in drama has been really paying off this year - in terms of some good numbers, and also in terms of awards, recognition and reputation. A strong rating for Restoration Home before it too, and Newsnight doesn't half benefit when it gets a proper lead-in as opposed to the variable 10pm fare it usually has.

Great evening for BBC2 last night.

Undercover Boss still pretty high. Good rating, about what I expected as there was a fair amount of press coverage for last night's episode. (Southern Fried Chicken)

Awful night for ITV1 and C5. I'm surprised Grissom's final CSIs were so low, I thought they'd be over 1m for sure, especially with Luther now finished. A little bit of casting news for you by the way: CBS has announced that Ted Danson has signed up for Season 12 to replace Laurence Fishburne. Great choice!

So-so for BBC One, but really the night belonged to BBC Two with a superb audience for Night Watch.

7pm hour ratings for ITV, and I don't think awful covers the 7:30pm rating :

19:00 - Emmerdale: 5.84m (30.9%)
* +1: 186k (0.9%)
19:30 - Animal Kingdom: 1.87m (9.1%)

Horrendous for them. Not quite sure why Emmerdale is that low and I'm trying to recall the last time ITV was under 2 million at 7:30pm...

I don't think those ratings include HD as DS's ITV1 8pm and 9pm ratings are lower than the ones reported elsewhere. Still low though. The animal/wildlife documentaries for them havent done well for them recently but yesterday's Animal Kingdom rating is the lowest I can remember for one of these shows.

Big news from Broadcast:

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/p...029804.article

Quote:
“Daybreak boss Rumsey to step down

Ian Rumsey will step down as editor of Daybreak at the end of 2011 after little more than a year in the post.

Rumsey was named GMTV editor in May 2010 and oversaw the morning show’s transformation into Daybreak in September.

He said the decision to leave was “tough”, but the time was right to take on a “different challenge” in the New Year.”

Hmm, that's strange considering its the usual person that has done the DS reports.

Still poor ratings with or without HD.

Some Bad Ratings last night but Undercover boss did well on channel 4 and BBC 2 had a great night. Emmerdale not great but it hasn't been very good so i'm not really surprised.

A few changes to Channel 5's schedule in week commencing July 23rd. Terminator 3 moves from 8pm to 9pm on Sunday, putting it head-to-head with Max Payne on Channel 4. New Cowboy Builders slots in at 8pm- although I suspect this will in fact turn out to be a repeat. And on Tuesday, Monster Moves has been replaced with special one off documentary Building Britain's Olympics, which you can find out more about here:

Dire night for ITV1. I expected Homes From Hell to be around 3m considering how well Cowboy Builders is doing in the 9pm slot for Ch5. No surprise that Cops With Cameras is sub 3m for a repeat, but Animal Kingdom is awful. They need to stop with the 2 1/2 hours of factual, because it's obvious viewers don't want 150 minutes of factual. There needs to be a bit of variety. Not a good rating for Emmerdale either. Share is awful and the raw figure is one of the lowest this year.

Pretty good night for BBC1 and Undercover Boss continues to do well. I watched it for the first time last night and it was a really enjoyable watch.

And more news. And more news. BBC HD is to become BBC2 HD!!

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...029807.article

From Broadcast:
Quote:
“BBC HD/3D boss quits; BBC2 HD to launch

The BBC’s head of HD and 3D Danielle Nagler is leaving the corporation along with her two team members - and is not being directly replaced.

Meanwhile, the BBC HD channel is being converted into BBC2 HD.”

Good move. Any HD content from Three/Four can be repeated on Two in the overnight hours.

In principle BBC HD was a good idea. But it hasn't worked, and the BBC can't really justify having both at the moment. In my view it's about time the UK's third most popular channel was available full time in HD.

Speaking of BBC2, I've been surfing BARB...

BBC 2 Original Dramas 2011

Figures include HD where applicable and figures are available on BARB. (It'll be a damn sight easier when there's a BBC2 HD )
(No. of episodes in brackets)

Eric and Ernie (1)………………………..6.65m
United (1)………………………………....3.88m
The Sinking of the Laconia (2)………....3.49m
The Night Watch (1)……………………..3.20m*
The Shadow Line (7).…………………...2.45m
The Crimson Petal and the White (4)....2.06m
Christopher and his Kind (1)…………...1.20m*

*Overnight figures

With a decent timeshift, The Night Watch should be up there with United and Laconia in the officials, behind only the huge Eric and Ernie.

Some pretty decent ratings in there, though one-offs or two-parters are evidently doing a lot better than the longer serials as retention appears a problem (regardless of critical acclaim). The Shadow Line fell from mid-3m on premiere to sub-2m by the end - and the Crimson Petal was down sharply too. All indications would point to a strong launch from The Hour next week, but we can probably expect it to fade somewhat going on this years trends. I hope not - the channel could do with a signature drama to get it recognised and everything I've heard about The Hour has been brilliantly positive so far.

This decision over BBC HD becoming BBC 2 HD might sound a good idea but wait for the complaints (justifiably) when it shows upscaled SD (as a lot of BBC 2 still is) and things on BBC 3 or 4 at the time made in HD get no HD screening at all.

How is that a sensible way forward?

Frankly,I do not get why they are making this change as I assume a third BBC HD channel is a long way away.

If it was imminent, fair enough....but to screen LESS HD than now, as this decision implies without some tinkering of the schedules, seems odd.

I asked for this months ago, so really pleased it is going to happen. I know most BBC2 putput is simulcast but it is a good idea to get it in place in time for the digital switchover and London 20102.

BBC HD has a nice freeview slot at number 54, whereas C4 has channel number 52 - I wonder would they swap? BBC2 on 52 and C4 on 54 - seems like common sense to me. BBC1 is channel 50, ITV1 is channel 51. I would like to see the Virgin HD slots cleaned up though (currently shown below) - time to bunch them up I would say.

108 BBC1 HD
113 ITV1 HD
142 C4 HD
150 C5 HD
187 BBC HD

No Family Guy in HD! That may cause some trouble.

There is no reason why BB3/BBC4 HD content cannot be shown on the new BBC2 HD, there is plenty of time at weekends and after Newsnight in the week. I wonder will Family Guy jump ship to BBC2 on Sunday nights?

The way forward is to make all BBC1/BBC2 content HD standard whenever possible - especially in primetime from 7.00-10.30pm, we don't really need Eggheads in HD.

Why did Corrie not just ignore the bogus articles?

I think the reason is that it was very clearly an orchestrated campaign and seems (if the references to supossed sources are valid) to have some some inside help.

This was not just one inaccurate press story it was a veritable blitz of them all saying the same misleading things in paper after paper. Someone writing these articles HAD to know they were making false assertions and yet the stories carried on.

So I think they had little choice but to respond and refute the stories with hard and pretty undeniable facts. Which is what Collinson did.

Even the Sun quoted from the This Morning feature today so it partly ammended for the distortion. That justifies the appearance I think.

As for This Morning wanting East Enders demise....not so, they promote it a lot (every week at least) and have had numerous features inviolving the cast - such as in studio quizes with them.

Anyone watching the show knows there is no evidence for any hatred of Enders. At least one of the presenters often refers to it as their favourite soap.

The complaints TM get (and often apologise for) is from Hollyoaks/Doctors for not giving them coverage and credit they say they deserve.

That will please the majority of Freesat/Freeview HD viewers who don't have an HD PVR!!

It's fine for us with Sky but think of all those who only have single tuner boxes and integrated TVs.
