It's only in August when the TV audiences shrink, so we could be in for some dire figures then.”

Thanks - which shows, exactly as I posted, that excluding Corrie and Emmerdale, The Royal was the 3rd highest rated programme!

It's just well scripted and acted and avoids the "oh (s)he's the guest star so (s)he must have done it" trap by having more than one guest appearing!

Truth is had this been Jan/feb/March EastEnders (and Corrie) would have been around 9million or over
Had New trick aired at 8:00pm it would have been lower

What rubbish.
Everyone i know That watches EastEnders are over 20 anyway .Freinds,Family,Family of freinds,People at work ect
Yes EastEnders has a big Audiance but it also has alot of over 30 year olds watching too.
Fact of the matter is had EastEnders been later it would have rated higher in the same way later Emmerdale or corrie at 8:30pm can outrate the earlier episodes as it's later and people are heading indoors.

7:30/8:00pm it's still sunny and people are likely still having BBQ/sitting in the garden or whatever.
9:00pm it starts to get dark and people are likely heading in to watch some tv before bed

EastEnders has gone up againt BGT quite a few times and also DOI(and Emmerdale) so to say ITV never put anything strong againt EastEnders is once again rubbish.

Your statement makes it sound like 14/15year olds watch EastEnders and may i ask what would your excuse be for a teenager sitting in doors on a hot monday evening in July just to watch TV.

The BBC 3 repeat ratings are also higher on days like this

That was me. Will be interested to see how Channel 5 adapts to social media in the coming months.

You've got to laugh at this when all over the place for the last week i've seen numerous billboards and bus stop posters advertising this. Clearly had no effect whatsoever!

Ha! No. You should know by now people don't pay a blind bit of notice on here. Like me they have their own ideas and preferences and that's that. If I was the strategy, I hope to God there's a plan B!

that is a good point, your whole "I beg you, watch the Mentalist finale" really wasnt much of a strategy.

Anecdotal, meh.

I know I shouldn't of posted that, I did say it was my opinion, as it was the OP's opinion (which he stated as fact), that the ratings would be higher at 9. This is of course conjecture on everyones parts.

I don't feel I need an excuse to say that 14/15 year-olds may sit in on a summers evening, I think the rising obesity levels amongst the young, and the fact it's a schoolnight, may determine something. Yes I do think 14/15 year-olds probably watch it, more then would watch New Tricks anyway.

Shouldn't have said "never", but I don't think the competition was that strong last night.

(I didn't say "after" in case that's what you're thinking?)

It was about as strong as a normal Monday night.
Thing is i don't see that many 14/15 year olds will actually watch EastEnders at that time.
If they are in they are more likely on their I Pods/Mobiles or surfing the net. To suggest 14/15 years go to bed early on a school night is totally wrong.
Where i live they are still outside (playing/doing whatever) at 11
Yeah it's popular with the young but a lot of their viewers are over 20 easily.
Even in the soaps forum on DS you will be stuck to find anyone around 14/15 (there's just very few)
As i've said i know loads of people that watch EastEnders and most are well over 20 (Family/Freinds Family in their 30's/40's/older)

Sky had one of the most original ideas that worked well for a couple of series and might have worked on ITV where they could have afforded bigger sets and stars.

The one where they got celebs to train to do circus acts and there was always the expectation that someone you did not like would fall off a trapeze.

This would be a nice companion piece to DOI - presumably called Celebrity Big Top - and they could eventually have a Christmas special combining the series where the likes of Katie Price skate over a tightrope dressed in a tutu.

It might really come to that now Popstar to Operstar has flopped.

If you're going to call it Big Top you've got to have Amanda Holden in it somewhere...

It seems to have jumped by 400,000 in the last month. It is ironic, though, that Hollyoaks is recovering in its key demos, yet the original teen/student soap, Home and Away, is mostly now watched by the over 45s.

the worry must be that Home & Away (& maybe Neighbours as well) isnt finding new viewers on Channel 5, like they used to on ITV & BBC. It was very easy for Neighbours to pick up new younger viewers airing after CBBC on BBC1.

Hello, Charnham, I think Home and Away and Neighbours are mostly watched by people who have watched them since they started in the 80s. However, both soaps were seen as past their ratings best on their original channels and Home and Away had fallen from a peak of 15 million viewers in 1990 to 5 million ten years later. Also I think viewers began to see through them as badly made, badly acted predictable shows.

By the same token then ITV must be worried about Emmerdale too, since a very similar % of its audience falls under the same bracket.

Terrific ratings as ever for New Tricks. It is chilling to think that had this been an ITV show following up Braithwaites for Amanda Redman etc then it would have gone long ago I imagine.

New Tricks might be the kind of show only the BBC could make and retain long term. Though I note from interviews etc that even the cast suspect that the BBC are unaware of just how popular a show they produce.

Good to know they still all love making it and that they are talking about two further series - which, with these figures, even the ageist BBC cannot fail to confirm.

Incidentally, anyone know if (and if not why not) the format has not been sold abroad? It is obviously a very popular concept that reaches all age groups and - for instance - casting a US version would be fun.

Is it because it is just too risky a venture for commercial TV, back to my point about maybe only the BBC being able to make this show. Otherwise TV channels everywhere should be seeking to recreate the magic formula.

I doubt they'd bother in a small backwater such as Peterborough. Adverts all over the place in Oxford and London.

Neighbours may have been past its peak, but it was still the most watched programme on daytime TV prior to its move to Channel 5. Why else do you think there was a bidding war involving multiple broadcasters when the rights become available? It was seen by commercial rivals as a big ratings force, even then. So I don't agree with you, at all. As for "badly made, badly acted"... pfft, when was the last time you watched either programme? They are no worse than the UK soaps, at least they're not bloody miserable all the while and set in locations that actually look good on TV!

I saw five minutes of Neighbours last week and for all I agree it's jollier than Deadenders( mind you even Crimewatch is happier), the acting was still of the heroic variety. However, the sets do seem better and there is more location flming now.

in some way I guess its a worry for all the soaps, and all long running shows, what happens if a generation simply doesnt bother to get into any of the Big 3 soaps? Its not like the young generation dont have plenty of other things demanding their attention. Once people start to watch TV on the computer, or on a laptop, it reduces the chance that their young siblings or children will see it, which im sure is how many people get into soaps.

you take that back, the local paper has just announced a new Marks & Spencers.

Also we do have some TV advertising posters, at one point Captain Jack was stalking the city on a bus, and Sky Atlantic continue to advertise in the city.

The Marriage Ref reminds me of Thank God You're Here, in that both appear to be formats stretched out far beyond their natural length - neither should have been hour long shows - and both were surely more at home later in the evening. If The Marriage Ref was on after ten o'clock, it might have worked better, you could get the panellists to be far more raucous and it could become a bit of a cult thing. But seemingly ITV have so few shows they have to put them in the middle of primetime.

Also, what is it? Is it a straight comedy show? In which case, why is Dermot O'Leary presenting it and why are they booking Geri Halliwell? But if it's not a comedy show, why is it on after the watershed?
