Certainly was a great night for the soaps, benefiting greatly from the below average summer we're having. That was Home & Away's best overnight audience on 5* and indeed 5*'s highest rated programme since (Monday) 28th February.

Some crumbs of comfort for ITV this afternoon, via Broadcast:

Quote:
“In the face of stiff competition from BBC1, Show Me the Funny fell well below ITV1’s slot average of 4.59m (18.31%) for the year to date.

However, the show performed reasonably well among younger people, as nearly a million of its viewers - just over 34% share - were aged between 25 and 44.”

Source: Broadcast

And that's backed up to a degree by the 16-34 channel shares for Monday:

ITV1: 12.5% (last week: 12.1%)
Channel 4 Total: 9.1% (last week: 9.2%)
Channel 5: 5.3% (last week: 4.3%)

It's the highest rating i've seen for a few months at least. With Jay Hunt confirming she has no plans to axe Hollyoaks and it will become "unmissable", maybe things are on the up:

Woah go New Tricks! That’s an incredible number for it, making it its joint 3rd highest ever overnight rating. With officials its even better, this will almost certainly timeshift to its highest ever official rating, which is currently held by 9.36m. Last night should surpass that when the officials come through as 2 weeks ago it timeshifted to 9.20m from an overnight of 8.3m.

Top all-time New Tricks overnight ratings
Mon 18th Aug 2008 - 8.9m (36%)
Mon 21st May 2007 - 8.8m (39%)
Mon 7th July 2008 - 8.7m (37%)
Mon 18th July 2011 – 8.7m (36%)

NT no doubt boosted by the latest itv stinker.

I gave them 20 mins to show me some funny. They didn't, so I switched off!

Steve Williams will probably be able to tell us. ”

Ooh, I am thrilled I'm getting such a reputation on here. Yes, I do remember what you're referring to, unfortunately I can't remember its name but I'm pretty sure it was an RTE production the Beeb had just imported. I also remember they moved the last episode from Thursday to Tuesday and everyone moaned they'd missed it. I'll look it up later.

When ITV had the 11pm news they ran a few dramas at 10pm, Wonderful You was one, which started on the second day of the new schedules, which was just Cold Feet II and was a massive massive flop. There was also Metropolis with Amanda Donohoe which was a This Life kind of thing, and which was memorable for a) starting one day after the identical BBC1 drama Hearts and Bones and b) starting on ITV's Day of Promise, that twelve hour charity marathon where you were invited to phone in to make pledges to make the world a better place, and they had the phone number on screen throughout.

Definitely some big (summer) soap ratings around last night and I think worth running through them.
That's Eastenders highest overnight rating in over a month and Doctors' highest since April 4th.

20:30 - Coronation Street: 8.95m (37.6%)

That's Emmerdale's highest full slot rating since April 4th, although it did record a tape checked rating of 7.65m during June. Coronation St's highest rating in over a month too.

Hollyoaks highest overnight since February 14th and joint 5th highest rating of the year so far.

Neighbours and Home and Away did well but didn't manage to break any notable recent records. Both were above their respective monthly averages though

Will the Gino & Mel chatshow fare betteer than Loose Women in its current slot?

Just incredible for New Tricks - an astonishing surge from last week. I suppose it was aided to an extent by poor competition, but it still takes a hell of a powerhouse to capitalise like that!

Terrible for Show Me The Funny, which I did think would do alright considering the usual strength of the Monday slot for ITV. Not to be and that one could become particularly painful for them in the coming weeks. The soaps had a good night all round (especially Hollyoakes) but there's very little else of note out there.

Emmerdale's rating is tape-checked as is Corrie's.

It seem channel 5 are moving The Gadget Show from Mondays to Fridays starting on the 19th August At 8PM, seem like a good move pairing it with what i assume will be Big Brother Eviction night.

Well that's interesting as it suggests either:

a) Eviction nights will run from 9pm to 10:30pm
b) Or 9pm to 10pm and 10:30pm to 11pm

I suspect Channel 5 will run it as one long show, but I may be wrong as I can't think of any half hour post-watershed shows that they actually have.

Fridays are a strong night but given that the show was down on Mondays it seems more of a demotion. I'm guessing 8'O Clock Heroes will go on Mondays like IRT

Thanks for that. Where did you hear that?

I knew it wouldn't be Mondays as Police Interceptors is a mammoth 17 week run so won't be done until October. But I thought they might have tried a night where it wouldn't have to take on EastEnders like Wednesdays.

Still, I am glad they remain committed to the show. I'm sure it can bounce back if this series is an improvement on the last. And Fridays possibly leading into a CBB eviction could be a good home for it going forward, a nice young skewing lineup.

Not strictly ratings related but an interesting development in Ireland, where from July 22nd ESPN will be free viewers who subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and 2.

Wednesdays is football night so it wouldn't make sense to move TGS there.
