10 years ago, it seemed that Shakira and Paulina Rubio were both going to have huge success in the UK.

However, over here Shakira has only had a few Top 10s and Paulina has completely vanished from our interests (I include a link to her awfully contrived CD:UK performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOorDmU4-4o).

On the other hand, they are both huge stars across the world, especially in the USA. Is it that the British are generally xenophobic to singers who aren't from English speaking countries? (Enrique is probably the biggest exception to this, but he sounds American anyway).

I don't think Shakira is achieving much success in the US anymore, seeing as her last album was only just/didn't get to Gold.

They're just too different, to be honest.

Sucks to be them. Shakira's Spanish tracks are very good.

With Sale el Sol she slayed with only 1 single out and ZERO promotion (at the time)

Shaki is world famous, I don't know where people are getting the idea that she is not 'famous' in the U.S.A. or the UK.....

my main point really was Paulina Rubio's music retracted back to the Americas immediately after a high profile publicity trail in the UK. she was on the cover of FHM, did Jonathan Ross, TOPT, CD:UK etc.

For interest, how many people on hear have heard of Paulina Rubio? She is HUGE in the Spanish market (equivelent to Lady Gaga).

But didn't Paulina Rubio's biggest single miss top 40, despite all the promo...?

What a comparison! Paulina Rubio??I didn't even know she had minor hits.I only know her from an MTV countdown for the hottest females in the industry.Nobody knows her, neither there nor worldwide.Paulina is a Z-lister

On the other hand, Shakira is a superstar.I shall remind you that her last album was 70% spanish, so of course it didn't slay in the UK, but it hit the top 10 in the US, which is huge for a non-english album. Also, Loca became a moderate hit in the US with no promo and worldwide it was a big hit.And what about Waka Waka?It slayed worldwide.
When it comes to her She Wolf album it sold very well ww and the tittle track was relatively successful WW, it just didn't reach Hips don't lie, so it was considered a flop.

What I love about this thread though is you all corrected the person that started this thread for saying that Shakira has success in the US. WAS THAT REALLY THE MISTAKE THAT UPSET YOU?? What about making Paulina out to be "a huge star across the world, especially in the US" ROFL ROFL ROFL (no offense, but really??)

Paulina is big in the Spanish communities in the US. In Mexico, South America and Spain she has sold millions of records since the 1980s (wikipediaed her, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulina_Rubio_discography : her single Don't Say Goodbye peaked at 68 in the UK) . And as I stated, she did a huge promo campaign in the UK but nothing ever happened with it.

This whole thread is about the UK Market. going back to Shakira - Loca sold hardly anything (although featuring rapper du jour Dizzee Rascal) and although Waka Waka is still played in clubs across the world and was one of the best selling songs of the 2010s, it's mostly unknown in the UK. So my question has always been: why is this the case?!

I disagreed with the comparison between Shakira, a worldwide superstar and Paulina who is moderately successful in certain areas, that are by no means HUGE markets.

Back to your question, Shakira wasn't successful in the UK because her latest album was mostly spanish and there isn't such audience in the UK.Also, she didn't promote there. Not even Britney could SLAY in the UK with no promotion

When it comes to Paulina, she never vanished as you stated because she never surfaced. The promo campaign that you mentioned went to waste. She hasn't made it because she has nothing special.I've heard 2 songs of hers and they were generic and I don't think she's really gifted

I haven't a clue who Paulina Rubio is but Shakira is huge over here, or atleast she was until the spanish album.

Shakira B-list status is a UK-only thing. In America, whilst she's not a big seller, she's still A-list and respected by all.

And of course, everywhere else she's HUGE.
