Congrats on OP hobbleitI was about to post just as the thread split but luckily (or not for anyone who has the misfortune of reading it) I managed to save my post
Evening all, and welcome back vf (brilliant post btw) ![]() What are TPTB playing at? Ok, they want to do a gay adoption sl, fine. I've always said I'd love to see Christian and Syed become parents and even though I would have preferrred them to wait at least another 6 months or a year, I can accept that soaps move at a much faster pace than real life, so I can overlook the timing issue and at a push I can accept that we'll never get a proper reason why Christian wants kids so desperately all of a sudden. It wouldn't have hurt to have a 40 second scene offering some sort of explanation, but ok, I can just about accept from the Amy sl that he's always wanted kids but just forgot all about it until NYD 2011. But for Christian to put his need to have children before his relationship with Syed, I'm sorry, I just can't buy that. It goes against everything that happened between that first kiss two years ago and the reunion last year and makes a mockery of the epic love story that is Chryed. And what makes me so angry is that there's no need for it. They could still have done the adoption sl without calling into question the strength of Christian's love for Syed. There's plenty of draaaama to milk from it by having Syed actually voicing his doubts about it, bringing up the religious aspect of it all, which hasn't even been mentioned. There's plenty of scope for conflict, and even a temporary split, in fact they could do it exactly as it sounds from the spoilers, but just leave out the bit about Christian being willing to sacrifice his relationship with Syed for a child. They could just as easily have Christian agreeing to drop the adoption if it's not what Syed wants and Syed then coming round to the idea, so it would be what they both want. It would make no difference to the eventual outcome of the adoption sl, so why destroy everything Chryed stands for in the process? ![]() can I echo the welcome back to VF and furthermore everything you've just said JN, with knobs on!!![]() ![]() Not so very long ago, Christian was really scared of losing Syed and desperate for reassurance that he wasn't going to leave him, it's just a few short weeks since he was down on one knee declaring "Syed, I love you with all my heart! Marry me!" and now we're led to believe that, when push comes to shove, he is so fixated on adopting a child that he would rather lose Syed than give up on that longing, the intensity of which the writers have neglected to explain ![]() Will we be less bamboozled, bothered and bewildered by the time next week's eps have actually aired and we discover how distorted or otherwise the spoilers have been? I bloody well hope so

Thanks to all for the greetings and well wishes - yep this move has gone on FOR EVER (still not finished) - it's a conversion (barn) and was delayed and delayed etc. But I'm sitting here now with cat ![]() Quote:
IDK. I think accepting yourself as a gay man is a very different thing from accepting yourself as being a gay man and a father. I appreciate the sentiment behind it, I just don't like the way JP's phrased it, particularly the 'come out of the closet' part. It makes it sound like Syed hasn't accepted himself being gay, when he has. He never anticipated having to reconcile being a father with being gay- he gave up the chance to be a father when he left his home as far as he knew. So I can understand that he'd have trouble with it, but I just think that line of interview could've been more delicately phrased. It doesn't bother me- I complained a lot about Syed's thinking it was morally wrong for men to raise a child together being done and dusted in a line. That would have been an interesting angle if they'd explored it in more depth, but they didn't at all. Well, yet.
Are you all moved now? Seems like you've been moving forever and a day. Quote:
Such a long wait till midnight!
Rhumba - glad your move went ok!! ![]() *Big wave to CC!*. xx ![]() ![]() Quote:
Hi Rhumba, hope the move went well
![]() I get what you're saying about Syed not fully accepting himself as a gay man if he can't accept himself as a gay father as well, but like mt says, it's the wording of it that bothers me. For someone like Syed, coming to terms with his sexuality was such a long and torturous process and it didn't end when he chose to be with Christian. That was a huge step and showed that essentially he has come to terms with being gay, but it was still just the first step to fully accepting who he is. As he said to Christian "I need to be proud of who I am", which I always understood as him having accepted himself as a gay man, but still being unsure about what that actually meant, what the reality of living as an openly gay man would entail for him. He was taking a giant leap into the unknown and it was still very much a learning curve for him. And what really upsets me is that he asked for Christian's help, and Christian promised to do just that, and here we are a year down the line and instead of supporting and encouraging Syed, being proud of how far he's come, we have Christian bulldozing and emotionally blackmailing him into something he's not ready for. Even during the affair period, Christian was never this pushy and self-absorbed, the opposite in fact I hate what they're doing to him with this baby nonsense![]() There are other reasons too, mind. But that's it really - I don't think that spoilers or 'soundbites' have to reflect every tender nuance - they're there to pique our interest and lay it out there. WE know the complexity of it - but we can't expect every line of publicity to reflect that. |

What I'm hoping with this interview is that they said after a trip to the supermarket didn't they? I think so, I can't check now..so maybe it was like when you get back and you're unpacking the car and the phone goes and you're worried about your frozens especially on a hot day and that's why it came out so badly and hopefully re some parts not entirely accurately? Because his ice cream was melting and he rushed it?
I presume they'd make an appointment for a phone interview but maybe it was a really busy day in Sansbury's and Johnny was late back. Or the person that answered the phone was his cleaner and she's/he's a corrie fan (with a deep voice if she's a she) who doesn't like that AC and his bloke are rubbish compared to our guys and was trying to even up the score? Hey Nadine

Both Syed and Christian have experienced isolation from their families, at different times and in different circumstances, and a lot is now at stake for them in building or rebuilding to create their ‘family’ in the future. Syed had a large family and effectively lost them -horrible, and devastating. Those family ties are (normally) part of who you are. Christian was also isolated when he was younger, before reconciling with Jane, and wants a family, he wants that kind of life, but feels he could loose the chance. Syed hasn’t got to that point yet, he has time and reservations, although the idea of a child has appealed to him in the past, both before Christian and with Christian. He’s conflicted, that much we know.
I’ll really hate it if Christian puts a wished for child before Syed. Truly awful . But I do recognise that although the longed-for family (the child) doesn't exist yet, it's still important, and can’t be easily dismissed. It's still fundamental to how you want to spend your life and the ties that you want to build and surround yourself with. The pain of both loosing family and wanting family are both powerful emotions. I don’t feel the need to equate the two in any way, they are different, but both are strong. The exceptionally painful experience of loosing your family -in no way am I underestimating that, I can hardly image it (I have been lucky). Where you are in your life, where you are looking out from, has a huge impact on how you feel about these things, how you experience them, although we are also complex beings capable of empathy and able to understand other viewponts (being the point of drama I suppose!). We, and Christian and Syed, are entirely capable of valuing someone else's point of view and then choosing what's important, but these are powerful emotions, instincts and life choices, so perhaps it can take time for your head to overrule your gut instincts and your fears and hopes, whether rational or irrational. Loving and being known for who you really are is such a precious thing, and hopefully both halves of Chryed will reaffirm their 'love conquers all' love next week, and how essential it it to them. A lot of what they want in life is similar; I hope EE don’t deliberately or carelessly loose them in the detail. |
