Best cover versions?
After seeing a couple of threads that focus on the worst covers ever made, I thought I'd create a thread that was more positive, and ask what you think are the best cover versions ever made. A few that come to my mind are:
Leona Lewis - Run - I normally don't rate X Factor contestants covering songs in and out of the competition, but this was something special. I still prefer the original but I loved this version too. Muse - Feeling Good - Absolute genius. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - My favourite version of the song, although I thought John Cale's cover (which is the one featured in Shrek) was good too. |

Birdy - Skinny Love
I have heard the original recently so i could compare and it lacks emotion and is very bland. Birdy sings it like she has written the song herself as well as with such heart and emotion. |

It might be an obvious one, always cited, but Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil is astonishing even after the thousands of listenings I must have given it.

I'll add another to my list: Disturbed - Land of Confusion. I'm sure some will disagree, but I actually prefer it to the original. While I do like the original Genesis version, it's an angry, "the world has gone to hell" song, and being a metal band, Disturbed gave it a much rougher edge and emotion than Genesis did, which I find more fitting to the song and its message.

Britney Spears - Burning Up
Glee Cast - Back to Black I don't necessarily think Naya Rivera's cover of Back to Black on Glee is better than Amy Winehouse's, but I do love the way it is more upbeat. I love both versions but on a certain day, Back to Black by Amy Winehouse is a bit slow for me! |

...is utter shite compared with the original. Unnecessarily cramming in more notes than was originally required does not a good cover version make!

Disturbed - I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For
Volbeat - I Only Want To Be With You Wheatus - Hit Me With Your Best Shot Beady Eye - Sons Of The Stage Muse - Feeling Good (even though I'm not a big fan of the song) Florence & The Machine - You Got The Love (again a decent cover but its so overplayed and I'm not a bog fan of this song compared to some of the other stuff she has done) There the only ones I can remember/think of off the top of my head atm. |

Andy Taylor's version of The Kinks "Lola" blows theirs away in my humble opinion.

I absolutely love the original, but Johnny Cash's version of Hurt takes the song to a whole new level.
