I find Wagner a bit bombastic for my taste, and while I like his work in bits and respect it, I don't think I would want to spend hours seeing one of his operas. You have to credit him with the development of the leitmotif though.
Many find Wagner's antisemitism problematic, and the Nazis' use of his work probably didn't help in that respect. I've never actually heard the fellow singing. I'm not sure there are any recordings of that in existence, and it's kind of missing the point. Wait....... what?!
