It was a standard thing to do before refrigerators were common in the home.

You need to make sure it is properly reheated though so it kills any bacteria.

Not much need to do it now though with most people having a fridge. Just let it cool, pop it in the fridge and take out the amount you need, as you need it.

I'm sure it's safe, as you say heated well, but to me, the taste/texture isn't the same.
