If you could only eat one nations food for the rest of your life what would it be?

Mine would be Italian.

I really couldn't pick. I'm very much a variety is the spice of life type person and love discovering new ideas and foods. I couldn't limit myself to one cuisine.
I love Italian but then I couldn't have a beautiful chicken dhansak. If I pick Indian I couldn't have a delicious Prawn, Pineapple and Chickpea Red Thai soup. If I pick Thai, I couldn't have Chicken with Chorizo and Seville Orange. If I pick Spanish I can't have Mouclade. If I pick French....well you get the idea.

I suppose if I really was pushed, I'd probably say British because
a) we're one of the few nations not stuck in our ways and happy to absorb new idea
b) our food's quite varied anyway
c) we excel at desserts. I'm a complete puddingaholic and mos other countries don't bother with desserts or have fruit. We have an amazing range of goodies.

I would opt for British - i.e.- the Scots, Irish, Welsh and English cuisine.

The local breads in every country is worth a hearty mention, same with the cheese.

I'm with Pixie Queen, the Bristish Isles have such a variety, where else would you find curried chips and deep fried mars bars on the national menu

The reason I wouldn't do indian is because it's not varied enough, and naff desserts. I'm not even a dessert person!

Another for British here.

Indian is plenty varied, for example, north Indian food is completely different to south Indian, goan is different to gujarati, if you go even further north to shimla, you have the kashmiri influence, so there is plenty to choose from. Same goes for desserts, the limited choice you see on most restaurant menus is not representative at all.

Name 2 really different dishes for me then so i can compare easier with google. Because from my brief look at the countries food you've specified it all looks like varying types of spicy food to me.

For example, a dosa and sambar is quite different to butter chicken. South Indian food uses more fish, coconut and fragrant spices compared to north Indian. A lot of Indian food is not overtly spicy, not like the balti nonsense you get over here. It is a very different type of cooking and taste, I'm quite surprised that people still think Indian food is one homogenous entity. Quite astounded in fact. Also, the places I named are not countries, they are states within India.

I never said it was all just curry, or that it was all the same, but it is all spicy from what you have said. I've just googled Sambar and it does still have spices in.

Nothing using just herbs. That doesn't sound very interesting to me if it was all i was going to eat, hence it not being the single nations food i would choose. I would want more variety thanks than just spice in EVERY meal.

I was tempted to go for Indian, but all the time? My toilet sure wouldn't thank me!

On reflection - English.

Bring on that beautiful fry-up!

the brits use spice in near every meal, its called pepper, not all spiced food is hot, your mistaking spice to mean heat, spice is just another plant to give flavour.

No i'm not. Sambar has way more than just pepper in. I'm not talking about heat at all.

Name a meal with just plenty of herbs in then? I'm curious.

I love spices, in fact i've just finished my Sheppards pie base which has cinnamon in. It makes a nice background flavour.

i very much doubt there is one, i think all at least us some kind of masala whether its just turmeric (in a bahji) or corriander, but every region tastes different so i dont know why you only want just herbs.

That is exactly what i am talking about.

This thread is about choosing one nations food. I'm saying there is spice in all indian food so i wouldn't choose that nation. Whats wrong with that?

I have no problem with indian food, i love it, but wouldn't choose it as my only source for food. I love too many types of food to do that, as an example that have herbs in.

well its your choice its just Indian food ranges from portugese influenced to british and french style to more burmese and nepalese and persian too as well as their own indigenous sushi, they have salads that have no spice but herbs.it has herbs, spices and everything inbetween if you ate every day indian food for the rest of your life you would still never have tasted all it has to offer, so much variety.

Yes, exactly this. Spices are not just about chilli, they add fragrance too and there are so many different types i'm amazed anyone would call it boring. But each to their own.

If you could only eat one nations food for the rest of your life what would it be?

Mine would be Italian.
Mine would have to be with foods I could not live without. So lets see:
I can't do without corn flakes for a light late-night gnash.

Grilled cheese sandwich with a hot spicy bowl of chili con carne, the ultimate comfort food.

Crisps, must have the occasional snack of crisps.

Beer battered cod, salty chips with ketchup and crispy coleslaw.

Baked beans on toast.

It's not Christmas without roast turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potato with gravy, succotash...

BBQ spare ribs dripping in sticky, sweet and spicy BBQ sauce.

A juicy grilled cheese burger with crispy bacon lettuce and tomato.

Crispy Southern fried chicken.

Chicken fried steak with country gravy.

Thin crust pizza with onions, peppers, mushrooms, ham, sausage and pineapple.

Spaghetti & meatballs with garlic bread.

Baked Mac & Cheese.

Chow mein with stir fried rice, beef & broccoli and orange chicken.

Desserts that are the occasional must have:
Chewy homemade peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies.
Dough nuts.
Cookies & Cream shake.
Rocky Road ice cream.
Blueberry cheesecake.
German Chocolate cake.
Pineapple upside down cake.
Warm pecan pie, pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie à la mode.
Raspberry and peach cobbler.

Is there a nation which can claim all theses foods?
