Youth engagement work - charitable enterprise or for profit?

When watching Melody's performance on The Apprentice, I thought of my friends in the youth engagement sector. They are all employed in public or voluntary sector jobs and do vital work, yet earn a fraction of what she does. I know people who have acted as voluntary counsellors on youth helplines for years, but have received little or no recognition for their work.

Isn't skilling up young people a charitable / public sector initiative by its very nature? If Melody was offering motivational speaking workshops to business clients, that would be a different matter entirely.

What does she earn?

Not sure, but she told Lord Sugar that her business was "very much for profit." Unlike youth worker friends of mine... One had to take a second job that he disliked just to make ends meet.

She was lying. I suspect she has a wealthy family who "sponsor" her fake business

You're making serious acccusations. Where's your evidence?

If you have none I suggest you stop before you get yourself in a lot of trouble. Don't think that because you're on the internet that your comments are anonymous or untraceable.

I don't think people are "falling" for anything. I'm keeping an open mind. You seem to have made yours up without any real evidence.

You have no idea what she earns yet you state that your friend(s) earn a fraction of what she earns? Some facts would be nice, not just your assumptions.

And all this because she didn't reply to your email?

It was a reply to post 1 - "yet earn a fraction of what she does"

she has never stated that she has made any money so I do not know how the OP can make that statement, unless you know different?

With respect, you display all the subtlety of a brick!

No I don't know her, more's the pity, she's a very impressive young lady.

How is she impressive?

She has been useless on the apprentice and has shown arrogance and a ineptitude at team playing.

what serious accusations? Looks like nothing more than speculation to me - dont think we need to be getting the police involved quite yet....just a tad extreme.

The following is libellous:

"She was lying. I suspect she has a wealthy family who "sponsor" her fake business"

And it's not the only comment of its sort that's been made.
That sort of unproven comment could harm an individual's or comany's reputation and livelihood. LAS has and does threaten people with legal action for making these sorts of statements.

Did LAS think she was useless? Get some perspective and try to see through the hate.

I've wasted enough time on you this afternoon - Zoltan, you're fired!

Are you the owner of the Cafe of Shame?

No, this is unrelated to the e-mail. I then mentioned my friends who are volunteers for various helplines and work part-time. Volunteers, by definition, earn nothing. It is safe to say that even the part-time workers would be earning less than someone who runs a profit-driven enterprise.

Have to agree with cherry-choc
This is a poorly paid area and not one that is generally coverted by people in glamorous suits and bling.

I've worked for a big charity (Barnardos) and I can tell you that the philosophy there was that if you want good people you need to pay them good salaries. Of course, volunteers are generally unpaid or not much better, but to run a charitable service successfully requires professional people which means professional training and consultancy, which seems to be what Melody provides.

So she now trains people to work for charities?

at 26?

Like I said, if she was offering these skills to adults in the business world (for profit), that would be one thing. But young people? Hmm...

If you want to see a good example of charitable initiatives in this area, look up the Muslim Youth Helpline on the Internet.

That's still different to the organisation ACTIVELY SEEKING to make a profit ITSELF. Most charities I know in this area are working ridiculously hard just to get grants for core funding.
