I have a BT cable coming out of the floor in my hallway that goes through an old oval BT box and into an old style BT square phone socket. I say 'through' the oval box as the wires don't connect in here. There is however a solid wire connecting to the oval box that I assume is earth.

The two wires from the first cable (coming out of the floor) are red and grey and these connect individually to clear jelly-like blocks, the red wire connects to a blue/white, the grey connects to a blue wire.

The blue and blue/white wires go into the old style square BT box.

What I would like to do 'hypothetically' of course, is to take the oval box and old BT square box away and replace it all with a new BT master socket.

A - Can I simply connect the red and grey wires into a new BT master socket?

B - Which pin will the red wire connect to? Which pin will the grey connect to? I guess I could see where the blue and blue/white wires connect in the old square BT box.

Thanks

You are not allowed to touch any of the incoming BT wiring. So you cannot really do what you want to do.

You could call BT up (if they are who you pay line rental to) and see if they can come out and replace the existing socket with the modern NTE5 type. Who knows if you are lucky they may do it for free!

But if you mess up reconnecting the BT line by doing it yourself then you could end up in a world of grief. BT could probably use the fact that you mucked about with their equipment as an excuse to charge you for a line fault when normally they would not.

I think I'll try that first, thanks.

I'll call and explain how old the existing sockets are and see what they say.

Cheers
