I am thinking about getting one of these for occasional use when travelling.

It will be used about 4 or 5 times a year for email, online banking and light browsing.

Any recommendations?

They generally have the best coverage.

Hmmm - that only lasts for a month, so every time I went away I would have to top it up.

None of the networks provide what you want, unless you can get an old Vodafone mobile broadband SIM.

But then you'd have to deal with Vodafone's relatively high charges and poor coverage.

T-Mobile may still offer per-day broadband, but it can get expensive if you're going to use it for days at a time. The advantage there is that T-Mobile's 3G coverage is good (as is 3)

Topping up via the website only takes a few minutes once you've registered your debit card. Personally I'd go for Pay As You Go and stick 1GB (£10) on every time I needed it.

Seems that 3 offer per-day options, £3 for 500MB.

Quite reasonable for occasional use.

Do you have a link for that?

It might be on 3's site somewhere. I was poking about on My3 and saw it.

Three payg sims offer the best value and flexibility.

They will last for 1 month or 3 months starting from when you first activate them assuming you don't use up your 1 or 3 gb allowance on them first (unlikely).

So if I get a Mifi modem from 3 I just put one of these sim cards in it, connect it to my laptop and away I go?

A standard dongle is cheaper and should do what you want. The MiFi option is for people who need wireless coverage for several devices.

I am thinking of getting a tablet at some point (if I can ever make my mind up which one to get) so had that in mind.

Well I got the 3 Mifi modem and trying it at home, I'm very impressed with it.

In my sitting room, I'm getting 3.2Mbps download and 1.2 Mbps upload. Easily fast enough for normal browsing.

Thanks Coljj for the links to the sim cards, at £4.45 for a 1GB preloaded sim, less than half the 3 store top-up price.

I'm off to London for the weekend and hope to use it there. The last London hotel I stayed at internet access cost 50p / minute

It was capped at £16 /day however - generous of them.
