Basically I'm not sure weather to go with Pioneer or Panasonic. I'll probably by buying from a local shop in Peterborough who mod all their players for multi-region. These are the ones I've narowed it down to.

Pioneer DVR420H-S

There is also the 520 which is identical to the above but also features a DVI input. I do have a digital video camera but my pc has firewire and dvd burner so I'm doubting if there's any point in spending an extra £100 just for that.

Panasonic DMR E-65EBS

This Panasonic is £50 cheaper. Doesn't have a built in hard drive like the Pioneer but does have a dvi input. I've read on google groups that the Panasonic can be unresponsive for a few seconds. And something about the timer function not being too good compared to the US version. Something to so with it having a manual timer system like most VCRs whereas the US rely on an EPG system that cable companies provide.

The Pioneer is DVD-R/RW only whereas the Pansonic is but DVD-R/RW and DVD RAM. What are the advantages and disadvantages about these 2 formats? I've checked and my dvd burner in my pc can read all these formats.
