Why do people say 'fillum' instead of FILM?!

Honestly, it annoys me no end.

The first time i heard it was when i watched East is East, and it was pretty funny, but now i hear it alot and the novelty has worn off.

Most annoying is the geordie voiceover guy on c4 who thinks it is cool to say 'fillum', it is not cool, and it isn't clever. You sound like an idiot!

It's film!

Why do people say 'fillum'?

Same reason some people say chimley. It's what they were taught when younger and language sticks

Most Scottish people do this. It's common in monosyllabic English words for Scottish people to add an extra syllable because we find it very hard to say them the "English way".

I find it extremely unnatural to say girl, film, curl, furl etc. "correctly" unless I put on a faux South-East accent It all stems from when almost all of us spoke Gaelic - the Svarbhakti is common in Gaelic and Scottish people use them in English words to make them easier to say.

I wish I could carry a pocket-sized version of you around at all times, it'd come in so handy!

You seem to be quite up on language, an area which fascinates me, but I'm often ignorant about.

I could like, break you out when I'm in Ireland, getting confused by the road signs!

Maybe it's my ignorance, but Irish looks similar to Gaelic..

You'd hate it up here. I never say film, but filum. Couldn't care a less what outsiders think.

So the Irish and Scottish say 'fillum', i best not go Ireland and Scotland then.

Doesn't account for why the Geordie says it though.

Because those with Geordie accents say some things that the Scottish do.

Aye=yes
The morra=tomorrow
ect.

It's just another one of those irritating quirkes of speech, like "somethink" instead of "something", or "Noocler" instead of nuclear"

Do Scotsmen wear killuts or is it just with an 'l' and a 'm' they have this quirk?

I have family on my Dad's side from the Newcastle area and i remember when i was a kid visiting over there they'd talk about fillums so i'd guess it's part of that regional accent too.
