I'm moving house next week and have been trying to get my services moved across in time for the move but having a nightmare.

I called up BT and they said they couldn't find a line at the property, but I know for sure there is one. The previous tenants had Sky+ installed so would have needed a phoneline too as part of Sky's T&C's.

BT have asked me to find out what the previous tenants phone number was but the landlord isn't getting back to me.

Any advice? I don't want to have to wait till I move in and then have an engineer round.

No they didn't.
Phone line is only part of the T&Cs for multiroom, or first 12 months of a contract (but this bit is not policed)

Hassle the landlord for the number or visit the property and ask the neighbours for ex-tenants name (then use directories) or number

You don't need a landline at all, just costs a bit extra to install SKY+

That's what I did.

However, you will need one for standard broadband of course.

I am aware there are ways round the need for a phoneline, I used to work for Sky But I would say 98% of customers would have a working phoneline in place when they get Sky installed which is why I assumed this one would have it too.

I called BT again, but still no luck. Basically been told I need an ex number of the property or I'm paying a fortune for an engineer to visit.

When I recently joined a new ISP for broadband, they sent round a BT engineer for free to check the line (They have to come these days as their vans are fitted with GPS) , perhaps this is a way around the charge ?

I had this issue in another property in that they weren't sure which line was mine so they sent round someone free of charge. Not sure why they are saying they will be charging this time round to check.

I can understand if it's to fit a new line in, but last time it was a 15min job for the engineer to use his tools to test the line and find the correct one.

Hopefully it's just something they say but when it comes round to it they will do it for free. Or perhaps if I tell them I will cancel my account they may offer it for free.

As far as I can see you haven't stated whether you've any physical evidence of a phone line such as a BT socket. If there's one there you could always try plugging a phone in and see if it's dead or not.At least that way you can tell BT that some of their kit is still in place, you never know this might just get them to dig a bit further at their expense and not your's.

Yes I don't actually know if there is a line, hence why I said I assumed they had one already as the previous tenants had Sky+ installed.

It was the one thing I didn't look for when viewing the property, and I'm unable to get the landlord or letting agency to verify if there is a line or the previous number.

If you can get access to the place, lok and see if there is a BT socket at the place, plug in a phone and if you get a dialing tone, you have a line. Then dial 17070 and you will get a reply wih the phone number.

If you do not get a reply try 147017070 as well.

If no dialing tone - you will prabably need a BT visit.
