Question from non-techie. I have a Philips W/S 32PW9616.
I now want to buy a DVD to compliment it. What is open to me?Budget is not a real issue but I don't need a model released today that would be 30% cheaper in a month!

All help appreciated.

Being the owner of a cheap and nasty bog-standard DVD player, I would advise anyone buying one to buy the best they can afford at the time. Unfortunately though, it is almost a certainty that anything you buy now will be cheaper in a few months time. That is the way it goes.

I made the mistake of buying cheap (based purely on the fact that I knew it was easily region hackable) when I could have afforded a better one, and could kick myself now for being so silly

Sorry if this isn't very helpful, but it's the best advice I can give.

I have a Sony 336 dvd player which has caused me no problems and produces excellent pictures. It isn't hackable but can be chipped but I have not bothered to do this. Sony are not making the 336 now. I think its equivalent model now would be the dvp-ns300 which also plays CD-R/RW discs too, I believe but if this important check it out.

You cannot get away from the fact that if you pay out for a model today it will be cheaper in the not too distant future, plus a better model will be available probably for the same price you originally paid. You have to jump in somewhere. My dvd player has come down considerably since I bought it.

I've had 2 midrange Pioneer players and been more than happy with both.
I suppose things to consider are whether youre bothered about region one compatibility - most 'cheap and nasty' players seem to be region free, I had to pay to get my pioneer modified and it still seems to have more trouble with RCE DVDs than fluffybunny's 'bog standard' player ! (see other RCE thread)
Another thing I wanted was a built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoder as I didnt have one on my amp, but if you already have a 5.1 amp or are not bothered about 5.1 sound that may not be an issue - although it may be worth thinking about as thats the reason I recently had to upgrade my player.....
