Its massive deviation from topic has been noticed.

Had a silly thing last night. Drifted to sleep with radio going last night. woke up in the middle of someone apparantly reading a poem...I wwas very dozy. Anyway ears pricked up When one of the lines was "Reverse the polarity".....

It jarred because he didn't finish with "of the neutron flow" but my brain slotted it in.. .

Now I will see if I can find what show it was.

Torchwood –Miracle Day – Review – End of the Road – ep 8

And somehow we’ve arrived at episode 8. I loved episode 7 and was looking forward to episode 8 to see what had happened to Angelo and also there would be the wonderful John de Lancie.

Now interesting point number one; there will be a few of these. We know how much RTD loves his same surnames well Colasanto was also the surname used in Turn Left for the Italian family. Back to the story. Olivia Colasanto turns out to be Angelo’s granddaughter and Angelo seems to have done well for himself, judging by the house. Rex, Gwen and Jack go in, while Esther stays outside. Rex still with the gay comments but this time Gwen tells him to go back in the cave and I wonder if Jack is gay in his relationships in MD – not that he’s been much else in sight – to play off the heterosexuality of Rex – just a thought. It seems that Angelo tried to live for ever and you can hear the hope in Jack’s voice that he might still be young but not anymore and Jack is faced with the sight of a lover now grown old – what Ianto always feared. Jack checks his eye and interesting point number two, courtesy of Jane Espenson. I assumed that the eye was a contact lense but actually the actor blew a blood vessel and they used it rather cleverly in the script. I wonder how close to filming that revision had to be. It created my favourite bit in episode 7 between them as well, so serendipity indeed for me. Jack’s comment about how he sees the whole world is telling and sad, as Jack is so much older in truth. The economy is going to rack and ruin and Gwen is pissed – bollocks and a good Welsh woman needs a pint. Esther really should look behind her. Love the old photos of Jack – that moustache. His granddaughter seems bitter at Angelo’s obvious obsession with Jack. Again science thrown in with the jellyfish and Jack finds he’s not the only immortal thing. Olivia tells the story of the three men and Jack remembers them and the deal they made; so who are they? These are the families – the Abelmarch, Costerdanes and Frines – which need spelling. Next interesting point – none of these names are supposed to exist according to JE but I checked and there were a few Frines in the past but neither of the others. They went to a great deal of trouble to find non-existent names apparently so Esther can’t find them either. You might however, consider one of those names. Jack points out that his blood doesn’t work and finds out that the three didn’t approve of Angelo’s love for Jack, even though he married etc. However as Angelo had listened to Jack he’d survived and prospered. Now we hear about the blessing and wonder what it is.

Friedkin arrives with the advance CIA. He has his own agenda and plans to deal with Torchwood. Gwen is still in pissed off mode and protective of Rex now he’s saved her family. So is Rex going to become a cat 1 as Friedkin taunts him? Would Rex really make that mistake I wondered? Ah Q, who is immediately wonderful playing CIA leader Shapiro and then we realise that Rex has stolen the lenses and is using them to expose Friedkin – well done Rex; you are CIA after all.

Shapiro makes his personality felt immediately but Gwen has no respect for him. She’s right, the CIA doesn’t have the jurisdiction to stop her on US soil. He makes a mistake calling Gwen both English and a girl and threatens to deport her. We find out more about Rex’s life, if Shapiro thinks the women will have slept with him, which both haven’t. Then the classic RTD penned description of the Red Baron with Snoopy up his ass which makes them all laugh and me too. You like Shapiro immediately for all his sarcasm and it’s almost like rutting stags as he and Jack square up. I’m reminded of that lovely homoerotic moment between Jack and Rhys. Notice later how they often mirror stances with hands in pockets and chest out! So Torchwood ends up working for the CIA.

But Friedkin isn’t finished. It’s a shame Olivia is blown up too and they should have referenced that they’d all be cat 1s rather than leave it. While others watch Jack slips back to see Angelo on what becomes his death bed. This is a lovely scene and next interesting point. This scene was according to Jane scripted by RTD who added the comment about Ianto which makes the scene. I cried the first time I saw it for Jack, for Ianto and for Angelo, who never had the guts to even speak to Jack over all those years, but loved him from afar. Now that is sad. I think JB is fab in this scene as is the music. We speculate about him mentioning Ianto as this shows how much he meant to Jack. There would be no way that Angelo would have been there to see him because he would have been over 100 by that time but we assume that he had surveillance cameras – perhaps he was clever enough to tap into Tosh’s and then who knows what he’d have seen. He’d definitely have seen Ianto then! ‘Work to do,’ Jack‘s standard phrase and one I use all the time. A kiss and then the machines all start but Angelo can’t die – can he? Jack is confused because finally it seems that someone can actually die. Rex worries that everyone else may be doing the same and how this will impact on him but Angelo is the only corpse in the world and Shapiro wants to know why. Jack is very cagey about what has happened and Gwen knows it – so what does Jack know because he’s a worried looking man? According to Jack the world is in trouble.

We’re back to the CIA and I wonder why Charlotte wasn’t sacked for allowing Esther to have her badge – who is she working for? My radar wonders how much she will check. She’s also looked for Esther’s sister and speaks to Shapiro with confidence and I wonder again.

Back to Danes, who I don’t like at all. I actually find Bill Pullman less than convincing too. His singing and dancing and demanding a woman is creepy. Jilly’s hatred towards him is obvious as well but she’s doing her job and gets help from a mole from the CIA. So why won’t she have to put up with Danes much longer?

Esther talking to her sister is so sad. Opting to be cat 1 is the nearest to suicide you can get as the ovens get used for all sorts; the medieval punishment of burning all over again. That’s she volunteered the children as well is even worse. The downside of online is you can always find like minds. Poor Esther is desperate and that has effects. Gwen phones Rhys and again we find where her strength comes from – her mother is a Welsh women and a force to be reckoned with – I know. So you know the families will have invested in gold! Suddenly we see how this is the whole world and Gwen feels very small. Esther spots the floor and Jack is worried and wants her to keep quiet so we know something is under there – something serious but Esther is desperate. Shapiro is apparently right about the cancer cells.

So under the floor we have an alien artefact which Jack doesn’t want to talk about. Gwen is removed screaming revenge to be sent back home. Jack warns them not to touch it. Morphic fields again but Jack doesn’t know everything. The panel has cancelled out the miracle – it’s a null field and it could null anything – which as Jack later points out means anything.

Back to Danes and the prostitute who finds that even she can’t stand him. She’ll have sex with him but not dinner – standards you see. Danes takes it out on Jilly and then runs off leaving her screaming when he finds out what cat zero really is for her later to meet our blonde man who shoots and recruits just like that. I find I was right to think Charlotte had something to hide.

Jack shows Esther and Rex how the panel works and stashes the alpha panel. He needs them to get him out of there to keep the plate safe before the CIA get hold of it. Angelo must have got it out of the ruined Hub. Jack has foresight and he knows this would end the timeline and they agree to help him. Jack is shot but he can die now and Esther has been seen so we’re left with Esther having to look after Jack which is good for me as I love these two together. What is she going to do? Will Jack be saved through ordinary means or extraordinary and what is the blessing? We’re back in Wales next week for the time of the Gathering.

I enjoyed this episode and I did enjoy the Ianto mention and I’m looking forward to episode 9 and being back in the UK.

Three scenes stood out for me this week:

Oswald and the prostitute....it's interesting how you almost feel sorry for Oswald here. At least I did. Bizarre moment.

The second was Oswald and Jilly's fallout...wow, you knew it was coming and it really was a powerful scene. Again there is almost a sense of Jilly being a bigger "monster" than Oswald is.

The other was the scene where Esther talked to her sister, it's the first time I felt an emotional connection with her this series.

I was a little disappointed with how the Angelo connection was played out, but at least it wasn't predictable.

i agree with the points you make there Muttley my concern for Torchwood is that it feels like its only half way through the season and its near the end, i dont want the ending to feel rushed with revelation after revelation at the expense of all they have done up to now!

i suppose we will just have to watch and see!

Lovely review Tumpy. As I said, for whatever reason, this was my favourite so far.
