Software Upgrade Samsung Galaxy S

I have been looking through my phone and notice I have firmware version 2.1 - update1. I presume this is the version of the android operating system on the phone.

I believe there is now a version 3 and was wondering if this would be updated automatically on my phone or if I would have to manually download it.

I may be completely wrong with all this!

Galaxy S now has firmware update v2.3 (Gingerbread). You can update using Samsung's PC software (Kies)avalable for download from their site
