Take That's success
I was at Wembley on Saturday night and had a good night despite only knowing the singles and being a very very casual listener. 87000 people packed into the stadium each night - 8 nights running......Robbie made the night for me - the set opened with the singles as a 4 piece - very low key and I was actually getting a bit bored by the end of the set....Robbie then shot onto the stage and made it happen for me.
HOW did this happen? They're good but not THAT good - is it purely the nostalgia factor for the then teens now 30 something Mums who like something to iron to?? It was certainly full of this demographic around me. |

I've never understood their appeal, albeit admittedly in this current incarnation Barlow's song-writing has improved a tad.
Mix of press hype and fear of the onset of the menopause imo. |

It was certainly full of this demographic around me. First of all, I would like to say that I'm not a crazy fan of TT. I don't even have any of their CDs. I rather don't listen to pop music. I don't like most of nowadays pop artists, especially their songs, in most cases they irritate me very much. But I have a soft spot for TT guys (musically and character-wise). My knowledge about them is taken from YouTube videos (songs, sometimes interviews). And from time to time I like to check statistics in YT videos (who does watch videos- genders, countries ect.) What I've seen in TT videos it's quite interesting. You said that only "the nostalgia factor for the then teens now 30 something Mums who like something to iron to", this is not true. For example if you look at their recent most popular singles, usually the statistics say : most watched by - female 13-17, male 45-54, male 35-44. This is a pattern in most cases bar "Rule The World" (1st place male 35-44, 2nd male 45-54, 3rd female 35-44). However there are some examples where the most watched videos are from male audience ONLY. For example videos from their gigs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfKSI...eature=related (Never Forget The Circus Tour) - 1st male 45-54, 2nd male 35-44, 3rd male 25-34) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPWJ3r2CBOU (Said it All the Circus tour) - 1st male 35-44, 2nd male 45-54, 3rd female 13-17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfCim...eature=related (Relight My Fire the Circus tour) - 1st male 45-54, 2nd male 35-44, 3rd female 35-44. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBgrv...eature=related (Rule The World Beautiful World Tour) - 1st male 45-54, 2nd male 35-44, 3rd female 13-17) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rXXk...eature=related (Rule The World the Circus tour) - 1st male 35-44, 2nd male 45-54, 3rd female 35-44. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTZgQ...eature=related (The Garden the Circus tour)- 1st male 35-44, 2nd female 45-54, 3rd male 45-54. and so on, I think there is enough examples. My conclusion is: TT appeal to a very broad audience, men also listen to and watch Take That but they seldom comment about their music, that's why from the comments on You Tube or on music forums you've got the impression that they have got only a female audience. Men are the "closet fans" because they don't want to be laugh at. |

i think that their concerts may very well be filled with people in their 30s. that liked them from the first time around.
however, they sell way to many albums for there to be only fans within that age bracket. i think that their second wave of success as definitely taken them to another level. robbie is a showman. he also has a pretty impressive back catalogue. in many ways, it doesn't surprise me that some people find him more entertaining than group. what i struggle to understand however. is how anyone could attend a take that concert and come away underwhelmed by the content? most of their singles are well known and have huge radio airplay. even the most casual of listeners should have had a fair idea what they were getting. |

I liked Take That first time round but second time round i think they are fantastic, the albums have been great, the concerts greater and i think they have manage dto build up a more wide appeal audience now than they did years ago which is a big breakthrough. Their success since they returned is amazing and i hope it continues for years to come.

I went Saturday & on the whole really enjoying it however I thought Robbie Williams was a foul mouthed, cringworthy yobbo.
I am no shrinking violet & thought his singing performance was great BUT him giving it the BIG I AM & trying to be a Freddie Mercury was nothing short of embarrasssing & completely out of place at a Take That concert. Yeah you sold out 8 nights at Wembley BUT only thanks to the other 4 rescuing you from oblivlion !! Also it was a 'live' concert - so sing to the crowd instead of gurning to the cameras in front of the stage for your whole set! |

Mix of press hype and fear of the onset of the menopause imo. These are some Extra Features from their documentary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJMVa...eature=related in this video (around 4:30) Gary talks about song-writing in the band. Now this might sound ridiculously for you but Gary actually said Quote:
I'm a good song-writer, Mark's great song-writer, Robbie's great song-writer....(I won't write everything, he talks also about Howard and Jason)...I think Rob is a fully formed song-writer. I've been blown away with what he has done. I feel like Mark's on a real journey. I feel like he's on his way to be like Neil Young, one of those just guys who sits piano and just writes songs for the rest of his life. I think he's heading in that direction.
yeah, the part with Neil Young is the best. First you may be surprised that he knows and likes this artist, oh and the comparison - it can't be true, not when you are "a cute one" little Markie from a boy band.... |

I think their success is because they appeal to a very wide range of people eg housewives, teenagers etc.

Listen I think that when you have several videos with several millions of views - the statistics are quite authoritative. |

I was never really that fussed about Take That, but started paying a bit more attention to them when Robbie rejoined (massive Robbie fan!) and since seeing them live in May I had totally fallen in love with them!
I've bought some of their older albums and currently really fond of 'Circus'. They have made a fan out of me. I'll probabbly even stick with them when Robbie leaves again too

This is the guy who played to over 350,000 fans at Knebworth. He is a huge artist in his own right. Surely everybody knows that. |

I can't see why not. There is always big demand for him to tour with his albums.

I'm 23 and I knew of TT first time around but wasn't into music then. I was more Robbie's era and liked him. However, since 2006 I have loved TT. It's the whole package - the members, the songs, the presence on stage. All is amazing.
I was at Wembley on Friday and I'm glad I got to see Robbie solo because I've never seen him before but I still loved TT as a whole. Also, I know lots of people my age who like TT and saw them on tour. It's not just 30-40 year olds |

Well firstly i am male. When Take That returned as four, they were producing some of the finest music this nation has ever heard. Greatest Day was the first tune that really got me into them. I can understand the success, their fan base is so big because all the women that loved them in the 90's ares till fans now and they have a lot more newer fans that prefer the newer stuff. As for Robbie making the show i couldn't disagree more, i spent most of his set at the bar. The other four will be behind the scenes cringing at his inappropriate behaviour and horrid angry gurning faces. The sooner he returns to his failed solo career, the better.

Yes chavvy housewives who get pissed at the gigs and have street brawls afterwards ending up in a pool of sick
I don't know which Take That concerts you've been attending, but I've not seen any of that kind of behaviour at any of the Take That concerts I've attended (and I've been to a few)... |

Figures released by the MRI comparing A&E admissions on the Take That gig dates to last year show an increase on six of the eight concert dates, with 87 more people admitted overall.
Considering that in Manchester they played to 50,000 people every night for 8 nights (that's 400,000 people), 87 extra people being admitted to A&E over the same period is nothing. I went to this tour 8 times, and whilst I did see people drinking/drunk I did not observe any "street brawls" or people lying in a "pool of sick". I think you need to get off your high horse and stop generalising. Thank you! |
