Totally confused.....
Hi,
I have been totally confused by phone shops and their "advice". I have a few questions if someone would be kind enough to answer them. Can I get push email on the old G1 and can the Android os (1.6) be upgraded to 2.1 or 2.2? Can someone please tell me if any of the Nokia smart phones have push email? |

I can imagine that push email is rather hard to explain depending on your questions. Most phones that you buy may not come with the feature pre-packaged, but that doesn't mean they're not capable. It's quite a generic term too and is only as "instant" as your connection... which on a mobile could fluctuate massively.
To answer your first question most simply; yes. If it's Android, it will be capable of instant push for Gmail. Your second; I'm sure they do, but I don't know/can't really explain how they do. |

Yes, Nokia smartphones do have push email (in fact there are several clients available). Some of their featurephones also have push email through Nokia email messaging.
Of course, as with all push email. It's only an advantage if your mailbox supports push. Otherwise you'll see no advantage over pull email. |

In answer to the question over Android update, it depends on the device and your provider. Even if your phone supports 2.2, if your provider decides not to a O/S upgrade then you may need to resort to a unsupported ROM if one gets released for your phone.
What device are you trying to upgrade ? |

What device are you trying to upgrade ? If it an Android phone the you will be able root and flash a custom ROM. There is no need to wait for the networks. |

Based on what i've read that appears to be true, although some of the updates may not work with all the phones hardware and features...

You would need to find a custom ROM that was made specifically for your phone.

Don;t get me wrong, I'm not against it. Both my phone and my tablet are rooted and my tablet runs a custom ROM, but I really advise for anybody thinking of doing it to read up and understand the risks and dangers. |
