I apologise in advance. This is probably a daft question. I did a search, but nothing came up.

Can thawed fish be re-frozen, and then cooked in the normal way? Fish fillets in batter to be precise.

I bought them frozen at 4pm, but couldn't get them into a freezer until midnight. They were soaked through the cardboard box (thawed I think, but I never opened the box to see if the thaw was complete)

They are now re-frozen, but are they safe to eat?

Many thanks.

No, you should never refreeze any meat without cooking it first.

Ah, I see, thanks c4rv.

I shall have to throw it away then.

That was my offical answer, my unofficial answer, I have done it in the past just making sure that the food is completely cooked. Its up to you, all guidelines say you are not supposed to re-freeze thawed meat.

I have just looked on the box and it says not to re-freeze once thawed. So your answer sounds official c4.

A shame, as it was not cheap. An unavoidable trail of events led to the fish thawing. Normally it would have been in a freezer within the hour.

I've re-thawed food and not had any illness from it.

I think they have to say that due to legal reasons. As I mentioned, personally I have re-frozen defrosted food many times. Then upon thawing, check it smelt and looked OK and I cooked till internal temp had reached recommended temp to kill bacteria and not had any problems.

Yes, I am going to give it a try. Elsewhere people are saying it's fine if it has been defrosted in the fridge. But mine defrosted in the boot of the car. 40c seems to be the temp that is the cut off. I doubt it was 40c in the boot of the car on Saturday.

I'll cook it to within an inch of its life and see how I get on. Thanks c4.
