To an extent the people with better memories will know more - but there's millions of these sorts of facts and chances are you don't all sorts of things others would consider basic unless you spend a lot of time expanding your general knowledge.

It’s very easy to condemn the candidates for making mistakes such as this but I wonder what percentage of the UK population would have got all those right.

I guarantee everyone posting in this thread will have made a similarly stupid error at some point in their adult life. When you are in a high pressure time constrained environment such as the tasks it’s very easy to have a brain freeze and forget some basic fact that you would otherwise easily know.

Intelligence and the remembering of general knowledge type facts are completing different things as well. Knowing the name of the man who brought back the potato or the country he was born in is far less important than the ramifications of his trip to the new world and the impact they had.

Yes my thoughts also. Britain isn't exactly short of famous historical figures is it?!

They could have named their pies The Churchill, The Nelson, The Wellington (beef?), The Shakespeare, The Tudor, The Windsor, The Victoria etc.

Not knowing whether Columbus was Spanish, Portugese or Genoese is forgivable, but thinking he was British is a fairly basic error IMO. I mean even if you know no history at all just the name itself sounds foreign.

I was particularly surprised that Tom and Helen made this mistake as they normally seem like the clever well educated ones.
