Aha, I guess the whole thing is sheer subjectisism at its best. However, I don't deny that I'll defend the show to the death if someone unconstructively insults it, without even trying to like it.

So that's about eight and a half million for and three against! I'm sure the production team are devastated...

Because at its best it's quirky, imaginative, intelligently written sci-fi filled with great characters and situations and with an amazingly versatile format that lends itself to telling virtually any kind of story imaginable. And at its worst, it's still better than 99.9% of modern TV.

Ting, have you just given RTD, of whom it is well-known that you are not a fan, a back-handed compliment?

Because its the best television show this or any country has ever produced. Because its smart, funny, beautifully written, exciting, unpretentious, daring, innovative, mind boggling, clever television. Because it can go from quickening the pulse to edge of the seat excitement to frying your brain to making you laugh out loud to making you think to breaking your heart to making you hide behind the sofa- often in the space of one episode. Becuse it has been written by some of the greatest minds in television and has featured some of the best acting talent this island has produced. Because its done all this for nearly five decades.

Yeah. Because of that.

Extremely back handed. You will note that I did say 'at its worst'.

And also by a Welsh egomaniac.

And also David Tennant, Freema Agyeman and Bonnie Langford.

And also because bow ties are cool and everyone loves a robot dog.

You're committed Ting. I don't agree with you but I definitely admire you.

Realise this is an argument from authority but also... because Sir Patrick Stewart is a fan.

I don't know how the actors even keep a straight face, but they have an ARMY of fans. I have watched quite a few episodes and not once have I not been able to guess the entire plot, not cringed ata terrible cheesy line, or felt like it's a quite expensive but actually, terrible quality show.”

As a confirmed Doctor Who & Torchwood devotee, rest assured I'm not gonna slaughter you.

I think with Sci-Fi, the suspension of disbelief is a very subjective thing. I *adored* Buffy & Angel, so assumed (on my fellow Whedonians recommendations) that I would similarly *simply adore* Battlestar Gallactica.

I didn't. I thought it was hammy, unengaging space-dross. I simply couldn't get into it.

My other-half LOVED Buffy but hates Angel (which is all part of the same 'verse.)

It's simply a matter of - some show will strike a nerve, while other shows will just get on your nerves.

But you'll never know unless you watch. And you did. So noone can ask for more than that.

if you don't like the show then why are you posting here? I can't stand shows like x factor but that dosen't mean I go on their forums and start whining about them, if you don't like don't watch it, simple as that.

Let it not be said that the Mods don't have a sense of humour.... lol.
But why bother to start a thread about shows you don't like on a forum where you know there is a dedicated sub forum fan following? It's like you're asking for loads of angry forum messages!

Second time tonight I agree with Bobby.

I do find sometimes that people seem to expect DW to be something it's not, though.

They seem to be looking for a serious, well-reasoned sci-fi show and don't get how fans can't see it's cheesy, full of plot holes, far-fetched, childish in it's humour.

But we can see it's all those things - that's why we like it. Because as well as those things, it's all the things that Bobby said.

I don't think there's another programme on TV where you sit down to watch and you know that literally anything can happen and you have no idea in what direction the programme is going to go. No other programe is as unpredictable and exciting.

And then, you know, it's got the Doctor in it - brilliant, dim, funny, serious, emotional, cold, a madman in a box.

Personally, I'm baffled as to how anyone could possibly resist him.

Most sci-fi is aimed at a more mature audience but I reckon most Dr. Who fans got hooked as youngsters (or through watching it through the eyes of their own children).

The hook for children is different than it is for adults - it relies more on imagination and fun rather than realism and grittiness.

If you haven't formed any emotional bond to show as a youngster I can see why you'd try to compare it unfavourably to more 'serious' sci-fi, but if you want to watch something sci-fi themed for fun and entertainment you may find you see it in a new light.

Personally, I don't see why so many people seem to require a 'plausible' explanation for everything that appears in sci-fi?After all, the 'fi' part of 'sci-fi' is short for fiction.

I find most sci-fi takes itself too seriously and lacks imagination, things that Dr. Who abounds in.

Though the premise of the show remains as daft as ever the writing, production, acting and effects (which in old Who were sporadically brilliant, and occasionally all came together) are now second to none.

Long live Dr. Who!

Meh, I don't like Star Wars. People have different tastes. And much as you try to force yourself to like something everybody else on the planet likes it doesn't make you wrong when you can't like it.

I hate chocolate too.

Funnily enough, I've been watching Dr Who since the early seventies, but I have never sat through an episode of Torchwood. The premise didn't appeal to me, not sure why.
