Hi All,

Spotted this job ad on linkedin for a Vision Propositions Manager. I won't post the full ad however here are the highlights. It shows what BT are working towards. Just wish their PR department would let us know

Job Description

BT Vision is the UK’s largest on demand TV service with over five and a half thousand hours of content and more than 500,000 customers. Entertainment is at the heart of BT Consumer’s strategy and with the arrival of super fast broadband and progress in the Pay TV market review there is huge opportunity to evolve our TV and triple play proposition

There are a number of key developments set to deliver over the next 12-18 months in BT Vision, including:-

The development of Vision 2.0 (a new more engaging user interface that brings recommendations and web apps to the service)

The launch of YouView (the UK's next generation digital TV platform which will offer free on demand content over broadband as well as channels from Freeview and Freesat that will bring Internet TV to the broader population). BT is a key ISP partner alongside e.g. BBC, ITV and Channel 4

The introduction of more Premium channels onto the service, delivered over broadband on BT’s 21C and Fibre network

The delivery of Vision on devices such as the PC and internet enabled TVs

In the fast moving and competitive TV space, clearly scoping proposition developments beyond 12-18 months so that the roadmap continues to evolve is key to ensure the BT Vision product remains competitive in the marketplace, capitalises on technological developments and continues to deliver a great experience to our customers. The role will provide exposure to Senior Management within BT Vision and Consumer.

From reading various news outlets/sources BT are planning this in the next 12-18months:

1. YouView/Wholesale Content Connect Platform - This is an efficient distribution platform where by the broadcaster (eg. BBC, ITV or for example HBO/Discovery etc) rent space and put their content on. Content is replicated to nodes closer to the end users and also allows for PPV services in order for the broadcaster to generate income and not rely on the Sky model.

2. IPTV - BT announced a while back another TV platform which will do multicast across the network and allow the STB to access full IPTV. This is in conjunction with Cisco.

3. More YouView - Over and above the basics described in point 1 - BT and the YouView consortium are looking for companies like LoveFilm to come onto the platform because it makes Vision and YouView more attractive by expanding the available content.

4. HD channels on IPTV - BT have stated they will be upgrading exchanges to FTTC/P and those left out during this phase will get ADSL2. This should allow HD TV over broadband.

5. The point about the user interface - this sounds to me like they are looking to copy what TIVO does. Not heard about this but it makes sense. Next gen TV stuff is all about "it making suggestions to you"

Since a lot of this stuff is in development or presumed development - Retail's PR dept can't really talk about products that are not ready for launch or have a price structure.

I'd guess a lot of what is already out there for better and/or cheaper..

Think its quite sad that they STILL believe they can expand using BTV as the tool.

IMO they need to concentrate on core businesses which is steadily being eroded by the likes of talk talk, Sky and others.

I have BT vision and it will be going next year.

I can't believe a box installed in May 2011 cannot receive and record freeview HD - BT assured me it would.

After some interesting discussions with them, it seems it will not. I now only pay for phone and internet and they let me keep the box.

Their future plans are of no interest to me,

So how do you know what is out there is better than what BT are bringing out?....Do you work for BT?

Well you could say that 21CN and multicasting is working on the core business, and as has been said, it is a much cheaper delivery system than satellite, so should attract business.

Scotty2808 - Yep good points I just hoped that BT would shout sometimes about all the good things they are doing

PureGenius - Good point but I disagree and believe BT should be in a market to provide content. If they consider themselves to be a content company as well then why not concentrate resources in this area. It may be in future that BT could switch to follow the approach Virgin have with not providing content but just distribution with BT Infinity. Possibly another thread .

Mike_1101 - Sorry to hear of your problems. This is of interest to me which is why I posted it and hopefully other forum members as well.

Personally I am happy with the price we pay and what we get. I'm really interested in improvements to the BT Vision service and hope they can provide better things in future for all its customers.

Yes it did happen, their sales team assured me it would receive and record freeview HD. I complained and it was a "resolutions team" in Yorkshire that told me to keep the box and dropped the price.

The sales staff need re-training.

Excellent post as usual. I get Freeview HD & Infinity soon here so BTvision 2.0 would be a great addition. The old box is still doing it's stuff without costing me a penny so I'm ok to wait.

Me to. Unfortunately Infinity is not listed for my area yet. Annoyingly houses 200 yards away already get Infinity. I have yet to see Freeview HD. SD upscaled is still very good. It improved when I changed to the black box.

Nice to see you are still about
