After watching tonight's episode, what is your opinion on Rex?

I have to be honest and say I really, really tried hard to like him but I just couldn't and by the end of the episode, I was just wishing he had stayed dead. For me, he just came across as very unlikeable, constantly moaning especially about Wales and just a very angry guy. I read some website which said his character was "charming", what was charming about him? I really hope it's just a bad introduction and that it he improves with future episodes.

They should have just brought back James Marsters back, that would have been awesome!

To me he came across as a self promoting mid level operative looking to gain favour with his superiors to get promoted. That was most obvious when he was on the phone at the beginning. He delighted in the fact another mans position was in jeopardy due to a potentially fatal illness in the family. No care for the mans wife, just how he could use it to better his position in "The Company"

I have to agree with you about Rex, sadly. I just can't take to him yet. He comes across as your typical, shouty secret agent type - and completely devoid of the charm we have come to expect from our old Torchwood characters. I suppose to be fair, he was meant to be suffering from injuries that would otherwise have killed him - so a bit of irritability was inevitable! But the constant groaning on his journey to Wales did really get on my nerves...

I didn't particularly like him either, although I did giggle at his comments when he was driving over the bridge.

Hopefully, he improves as the series progresses and settles down a bit.

I did like Esther though.

I've watched this a couple of times - the first time I almost cheered when he was in the accident because he was so unlikable, but later on when he's watching the news and you see the emotional impact as what happened to him hits home, he became a bit more likable as a character.

I think it's deliberate that he starts off so unlikable so he has somewhere to go once Torchwood starts changing his way of thinking.

I liked Rex, he'll be a good foil for Gwen, he was an asshat at the begining but by the time he was ripping the tubes out and just determined to find out what was going on I warmed to him. Also Esther is supernice (hidiculous heels for running mind) and if she likes him he can't be all bad.

Then he used PC Andy as a weapon for Extraordinary Rendition and I resumed the asshat opinion.

I don't think we are supoosed to like the guy, not at this point anyway.

Love Marsters, but if his new SyFy show takes off its unlikely we will see him again on TW.

I did not like Rex either, which was surprising because I usually like the actor a lot. I'm hoping that most of what made him unlikable was because the actor added "injured" with "angry and constipated."

Maybe he will mellow out and be likeable.

IMO Rex has still to get the tone. It's the sharp interactions with others that makes Torchwood what it is. Not the over dramatising of the 'You mean the whole world's in a really big danger. Get me on a plane !' parts.

Surely the CIA would know Wales and England are two different contries.

Well I cheered to myself when he was skewered, until I remembered that nobody can die. Does that answer your question

I did actually find him funny somethimes, infuriating most though.

He came across as a stereotypical American: being loud and ignorant. He only needed to be fat to be a perfect American stereotype.

Yeah, but his focus was on clandestine operations in South America, judging by his phone conversation when he got skewered by the rebars...

Three words, boring overacted steriotype.

Terribly overblown character, having watched through three times now I haven't warmed to him OR Esther (in her ridiculous heels) one bit. I have to say I took some pleasure in him getting skewered on second and third viewing!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just had to share this. Back when the character of Rex was first announced, he's long been a joke amongst my mates due to just how much of a Marty Stu his character description was. One of the funniest things I've read:

Yes, they probably do. But not necessarily every individual in the organisation...

A few years ago, an American Education Organisation produced Atlases for the schools, and completely missed out Wales. They didn't forget to name the place, it actually didn't appear on the Atlas... Nobody recognised it until they were being used...

So it's not at all inconceivable that somewhere outside of America, that is tiny, is not known as a separate entity by individuals.

I agree with you. I thought the US characters in "Miracle Day"
were rather forgettable. Rex came across as a generic action
hero. And why would a member of the top-secret CIA
keep flashing his badge and shouting his name (spies, unlike
cops, don't like to draw attention to themselves) ? And I can't
remember anything about Esther or Vera !

Exactly. The actor is obviously doing a great job if many viewers are finding him unpleasant.

Possibly because you came into the series with a negative opinion. Just sayin'.

I don't know whether he's a comedy character or a serious one.

I suppose there's plenty of time to find out.
