Can you connect an external DVD player to a TV/DVD combi?
I've got a clunky old TV/DVD combi in the bedroom which is old but reliable so I'm not looking to replace it yet.
And I've just bought a standalone multi-region DVD player for watching Region 1 DVDs. I was wondering if it's possible to hook it up to the combi, and if so, how do I override the built in DVD player? Any advice much appreciated

Have a look at the back of the TV to see if it has any input connections other than the aerial. If it is capable of having an external video source then there will be a button on the TV and the remote to switch input sources.

Provided there is a SCART socket on the back of the telly and a similar SCART socket on the back of the stand alone DVD then it is simply a matter of getting a bit of wire and connecting the two together.
When you turn on the DVD player the telly will see a signal on the SCART and automatically switch to it (or it should do). |

Thanks for replying. I have connected it up to the combi with a SCART, but it isn't overriding the built-in DVD player. Hmm... perhaps it's something as simple as making sure there isn't a DVD in the tray of the built-in player. I'll have an experiment.
Thanks again! |

It is completely and totally irrelevant whether there is a disk in the DVD drive built into the telly or not. Or indeed if you got totally p'ed off with the thing and took a hammer to it and ripped the built in player out and smashed it into a million pieces.
![]() Either the stand alone DVD player is not outputting the SCART switch signal or the TV is not responding to it. In either case you will need to go into the menus of both and look for something that looks like "SCART Control" and turn it on. |

There's an input selector button on the TV remote control. It's a rounded rectangle with a horizontal arrow, top-ish right-ish going into/out of the rectangle. Press that.
Or else is says "input" or "AV" or "mode" or something. Cheers, David. |

It makes no difference whether or not there is a DVD in the drive of your TV/DVD combi, you simply need to select the correct AV input on your TV to view anything connected to the scart socket(s), as it sounds like your TV is not auto switching.

I've never come across that option on any Tv or DVD player. |

The only devices I've ever come across with an option to turn on or off "scart control" are Sky STBs.
I've never come across that option on any Tv or DVD player. |
