Jools Holland is far better than anything STV will put on tomorrow night.
As I said I will end up watching BBC1 Scotland in the run up to the bells and may switch to BBC2 for a short while for the end of Jools Holland.
STV for the last few years has been crap at Hogmanay.
BBC1 Scotland has 8 times out of 10 always been a little better than STV at Hogmanay.

Darren
I think that is the point, BBC Scotland have their programme for those who want that sort of thing and it has a much better balance than years ago when it was just a bunch of drunken Scots in lace and skirts. Then there is Jools with his long running programme on BBC2 and people who want it, can watch Norton and Robbie William if they have Freesat.

Just a thought, did STV once get caught out by covering the Edinburgh New Year's Eve pop concert and then finding it was cancelled because of the weather (seems to happen regularly!)? Might have put them off a live programme though I think the difficulty of competing with the BBC is main factor.
Possibly that is what happened - the year Erasure were scheduled to perform and it was cancelled due to extremely high winds. Can't remember when that was - maybe 10 + years ago?

I think the majority of viewers are now conditioned into switching on BBC1 Scotland which (though not perfect) gives the viewer variety.

I noticed that STV had made a change which seemed to be last minute, rather than have a jukebox (whatever they we're planning on that I don't know) to drop it to then put on a Bay City Rollers Special - they knew they we're going to be beaten, saying that BBC Scotland on Hogmanay this year was not bad - the Scottish Documentary about Scottish characters in films/animation - ie Groundskeeper Wullie in "the simpsons" and the stereotype we get portrayed as (can't remember it unfortunately) and Only An Excuse for a change (in my opinion) was alot better to previous years! (Judy Murray and Frankie Macavenie - can't spell his name right lol)

That's a massive drop for STV.

I wonder how STV's ratings are on their own opt outs and how the ITV programmes rate on STV ie the STV pick n mix programming - shove one on don't complete it and put it on a few months later treatment? I bet the programmes do take a direct hit due to this but I wonder what the excuse is? "viewers are not interested"?? If that was an excuse I woud hope someone would knock them down a peg or two and say you lot hardly finish them! (this is directed at STV)

Really they should finish a series all in one go, not drop it halfway through and show it again in 6 months.

If it was the other way around then there would be resignations at the BBC but probably just pay increases and bigger bonuses at bloated STV.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year!

So we're into 2017 and as we look back at 2016 IMO the gripes and niggles with STV so no sign of easing:-

1. Mainly lack of continuity (i.e. starting shows and interrupting them/dropping them and then they reappear at random - with absolutely NO courteous viewer information on screen) with ITV networked "minor" shows, and not taking the opportunity to screen these shows late at night before Teleshopping.

2. Absolutely no sign of any real creative imagination or depth to be afforded to the ITV network. Other than Catchphrase, Animal 999 and (to be fair good) People's History Show I can't name much else STV has done (and very little is shown across the network now) - what a sad state of affairs compared to the days of Taggart and all those years ago...

Will we see any change to the above 2 in 2017? I doubt it...

So here are the STV OPT OUTS for Sat. 7th-Fri 13th Jan. As always programmes may be subject to change, with the ITV showings in brackets:-

NO primetime variations this week, and once again another programme gets dropped after 1 week - CELEBRITY HOME SECRETS disappears!

Late night variations:-

TELESHOPPING (Sat, Sun, Tue & Fri - Gambling), (Mon - The Chase/Gambling), (Wed - It's Not Rocket Science/Gambling), (Thur - Tipping Point/Gambling),

So the "no show on STV" list updates and now looks like this:-

2016:-

COUNTRYWISE (Series 8, parts 1-15, Sept), FISHING IMPOSSIBLE (parts 3-10, Sept), CELEBRITY HOME SECRETS (parts 2-6, Aug), WILD FRANCE WITH RAY MEARS (parts 1-6, July), BARGING ROUND BRITAIN (Series 2, parts 1-6 Apr), FURTHER TALES FROM NORTHUMBERLAND (Series 3, parts 5-8, Feb)

2014 & 2015:-

BRITAIN: AS SEEN ON ITV (part 6, Aug 2015), SUPERHOSPITAL (June), BRITAIN'S BUSIEST AIRPORT - HEATHROW (series 1, parts 1-3, May), SECRETS FROM THE SKY & HOTEL IN THE CLOUDS (Nov 2014)

Nothing short of embarrassingly terrible.

The audience are so used to turning on BBC1 Scotland at New Year and despite Only An Excuse being in its umpteenth year the Scottish audiences favour the more creative input across the station from 9/10pm onwards.

Whilst I commend STV for trying there was no way a pre recorded Hogmanay show was going to trump BBC1 Scotland's Jackie Bird. The Bay City Rollers programme was a last minute change (and to be fair was alright) but over the piece maybe they would be as well hooking up with the network as they seem to have permanently lost that audience.

Wait, the Dundee show was pre-recorded? I'm glad I stuck to BBC One then.

Sadly this is not the STV way of thinking --- all you have to do really is look back over MrSirs posts regarding what is started/missed on STV or if they drop it start it again!

I agree that the programmes should be done in one go be drama, be quiz shows or be something like Countrywise/Wild Ireland/Ray Mears but STV don't make any on air announcements apart from the viewer guessing ie STV Appeal is on one week so expect chaos...(sorry the build up to it...)

Yep but then again every year STV does this pre-recorded - even I remember when they had "the hour" new year special on that too was pre-recorded, when bells we're going off I presume STV stuck on old footage of the Fireworks going off at the castle in Edinburgh or did they go live on that part?

Well that didn't take long did it? Not long into the new year and STV takes off Celeb Home Secrets after 1 episode (again this is exactly what I mean and as you correctly point out as well --- why air something like this now after ONE WEEK to drop it?) I get the point to a degree regarding quotas but this whole ITV (i'll list it under "other" as for us watching STV it would be possibly "regional" opt out) programmes - STV just like ITV has a "remind me" service on their site let alone you could series link this on Virgin/Sky etc. STV doing these startups and drop outs are doing the channel a disservice in my opinion but I doubt if people complained to OFCOM/STV it would be brushed off with a pathetic excuse.

MrSirs you may as well list Celeb Home Secrets for 2017 next to be started off to then be dropped

You mentioned People's History Show - yet another show which even STV fails to edit out days of the week it ain't on let alone make any announcement of change of day ... yes STV is ran by idiots for idiots!

Wouldn't surprise me for the viewing figures for it the bosses got bonuses - for a channel all year round being cheap on programming let alone their "locals" to soon be known as STV2 it makes you wonder why this company is still floating with little programming it makes and let alone any ITV programming it buys in basically takes the mick with lack of continuity it is beyond a joke!

Still laughable though that these "local" channels are becoming more "regional" well for us in Scotland that is -- expect more simulcasting off Glasgow and nothing more (apart from news!)
