Interview in todays Scottish edition of The Express with actor Kenny Ireland, who plays mild mannered swinger Donald Stewart in 'Benidorm' - presently missing in action on our STV schedules.
"I feel let down that my own country can't watch it. The reason STV is not taking it is because the can't afford it, I presume. This is not a value judgement on the programme because 9 million viewers are saying they like watching it. I think it is saying they're in trouble, isn't it?" Well said that man! I'd like to take that article and shove it down Lorraine Kelly's throat.

Talk about doing a disservice to your own country's actors. "not relevant to Scotland" I presume?? Total and utter hypocrites.

Now I wouldnt be at all surprised if STV are really in trouble...but he makes sense .... if its popular with viewers on both sides (originally) why cant STV not show it?? ... havent seen STV do anything more for their "comedy" have we?? ... that ship sailed long ago .... |

![]() Blame management of STV with the "timing" .... give them an email and see what the answer will be .... possibly you will be given "unknown" or "programming dedicated to Scotland" as an excuse.....STV is taking its viewers for a ride, just wait until it reaches the end..... |

Seiko your forgetting "this crap" they have on now was broadcast 18 month ago on ITV1 ... it would have been alot EASIER if STV had just stuck to these programmes "missed" back then

STV must be able to have a proper balance somewhere, STV has click its needs to start replacing drama with drama, but that does not mean killing off all ITV drama. Now yes I agree with the opt out policy, as long as it good, and were only missing out on dross... only reason were getting Married dross is because it was axed, and flopped. |

Second series of 'Scott & Bailey' (? is that the correct title) begins soon - we got series 1, will we get series 2?
It is the lack of coherent policy that gets me! 'Married/Single' etc was not good, despite a worthy cast, yet STV are still happy to show it - so presumably it is CHEAP?!? |

STV dont know how to do that - they "replace" drama with "imported" drama ... dont see a "like for like" still ... nothing under the radar of it being "scottish" yet I wouldnt mind if STV had gave me a "regional" opt out than the dross it gives me that it PRODUCES from STV HQ ... but like I say do they really care??? - hardly just thinking of themselves with "savings" also known as "money in their OWN pockets" I havent seen much of their "opt outs" worthy of what gets missed ... its all done "cheap" .... here is an example Watched Cornwall with Caroline Quentin very well done explaining about the area and its people .... STV --- example ... Moviejuice .... presenter stumbles on a few lines (noted this last week) - you would think since its PRE-recorded he could get his lines EXACT but no ... presenter stumbles and is broadcast on STV.... talk about "professionalism" of STV

I think they got it on the cheap seems obvious to me being honest ... why not have shown it when it was on ITV1 at same time? .... no scottish cast? not relevant to scotland?? ... STV being cheap? yes! |

Here are the STV OPT OUTs for the remainder of this week:-
MONDAY 20TH - 8.00-8.30pm - ITV: Cornwall. STV: WEATHERWATCH WITH SEAN BATTY 9.00-10.00pm - ITV: Whitechapel. STV: IDENTITY. 10.30pm-2.35am - ITV: That Sunday Night Show/Law & Order UK/River Monsters/The Zone. STV: SCOTLAND TONIGHT - THAT SUNDAY NIGHT SHOW (rpt) - RIVER MONSTERS (rpt) - JEREMY KYLE (rpt) - NIGHTSCREEN. Verdict: The main network forges ahead with STV losing out on Cornwall & Whitechapel. STV joins the network at 2.35am with FOOTBALL then NIGHTSCREEN. ITV WIN. TUESDAY 21ST - 10.30pm-5.30am - ITV: Benidorm/The Cube/The Zone/Crossing Jordan/Nightscreen. STV: SCOTLAND TONIGHT - PIERS MORGAN'S LIFE STORIES - IN PLAIN SIGHT (rpt) - VET SCHOOL BITES - NIGHTSCREEN (from 1.00am). Verdict: STV viewers lose out on a repeat of Benidorm, but there's not much to choose between the 2. DRAW. WEDNESDAY 22ND - 10.30pm-5.30am - ITV: Champions League/Kidnap & Ransom/The Zone/Film:Brewster's Millions/Nightscreen. STV: SCOTLAND TONIGHT - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - CROSSING JORDAN - BEYOND EXPLANATION (rpt) - NIGHTSCREEN (from 1.00am). Verdict: Close between the 2, but ITV throws in a reasonably rated movie during the night. ITV WIN. THURSDAY 23RD - 10.30pm-5.30am - ITV: Jonathan Ross/Around The House/Take Me Out/The Zone/Tonight/Nightscreen/Jeremy Kyle. STV: SCOTLAND TONIGHT - JONATHAN ROSS (rpt) - THE NIGHTSHIFT (from 12 midnight). Verdict: Again, not much to choose between the 2, but the awful Nightshift coming on at midnight edges it for the network. ITV WIN. FRIDAY 24TH - 8.00-8.30pm - ITV: Safari Vet School. STV: MOVIEJUICE. 9.00-10.00pm - ITV: Benidorm. STV: MARRIED SINGLE OTHER. 12.05-5.30am - ITV: The Zone/Film:King Kong/Nightscreen. STV: THE NIGHTSHIFT (from 12.05am). Verdict: For their screening of the new series of Benidorm, plus Safari Vet School and the 1976 version of King Kong through the night, the network's a clear winner tonight. ITV WIN. Conclusion: Once again STV viewers are let down by a no show of Benidorm, Safari Vet School, Cornwall & Whitechapel - all well rated and popular programmes in the UK.

I read on TV Forum that the weekend regional news is now from Glasgow for the whole of Scotland, which has to be a negative step backwards

My STV News made a BIG blunder.....I got told that they were meant to go to a report and it ended up during the report ... we see Tyrone (sports presenter) coming with a bottle and then speaks to Norman Mcleod .... Norman says "we got alot of news stories" ends up rumbling his papers and after the report finished no apology was made.....or will that be tomorrow I wonder? |

Just noticed that the Nightshift (DJ with clips overnight cheapie) has been reduced to weekends only and been replaced by the appaling ITV Nightscreen.
Nightshift was a lot better than a few slides and test card type music and qualified as locally produced programming. One has to wonder why it has been scaled back? |

Maybe they are scaling back because it's even cheaper to buy in Nightscreen!

The music Stv play during the night is their own copyrighted library music. They play this for hours and then claim the PRS royalties thus generating more money for the company. Kerching!

The above was originally posted in the DS Ratings thread in the Tv Prog forum this week. Here's my reply:- STV have had a policy of opting out of primetime shows - at the moment no Cornwall, Law & Order UK, Whitechapel, Safari Vet School, Benidorm, Eternal Law etc.. Some of these shows will never be shown up here in Scotland - others will surface in a few months, or several months time. At the moment we are putting up with Married Single Other (shown in 2010 on ITV), Midsomer Murders with John Nettles, plus cheap imports from Ireland and Australia, and cheap home produced fillers (Moviejuice/Scottish Passport...). Last year STV claimed they were opting out of shows because they were "not relevant to Scotland" - so no Downton Abbey series 1, Doc Martin etc.. etc.. Then, due to public/media pressure they hastily showed series 1 of Downton (the final part screening on the afternoon series 2 started!!), Doc Martin etc.. The problem with STV is they want to hold off on "expensive" dramas/progs & try and buy them on the cheap at a later date. They then make a song & dance about them and proclaim them as "NEW to STV" - all the while forgetting the publicity buzz has gone and although viewers could have seen them elsewhere (ITV Player, ITV London via Sky, ITV3 or ITV4 etc..) many would miss them if they only have Freeview (and no access to a pc). Oh yes and if you want to read about how bad STV are have a look at the "Not Scotland what are STV playing at?" thread in DS Broadcasting forum. |

STV are in a financial pickle, advertisers/viewers are deserting in droves and it is struggling to meet financial obligations, they opt out because they cannot fully fund the program costs of the missing shows.
EDIT - so really these "profits" we heard from them is really another story in which they use to "backup" they are fine yet which they clearly are not....its nothing to be ashamed of if they had explained it all back in the beginning but they didnt anyway ... they thought it was all for the "greater good against ITV" and its backfiring massively and the cycle is not going to stop.....oh well they already wiped out Grampian TV anyway nothing "local" about it nor any "programming" variety so heck don't much care for it as I use to do back then.....its a dying channel and if STV don't do anything quick it will be gone sadly .... and their "licence to print money" theory has totally gone .... no money to print I think .. ink has ran out and is dry

I could count on the fongers of two hands the number of minutes I have watched stv in the last 12 months as most of my viewing is through my Sky HD box and 103 is not an attractive proposition very often.
For me its ITV1 most of the time and if stv vanished it would take me a long while to notice. |

EDIT - STV needs to get its fingers out and actually "spend" money than just "save" for their own back pockets .... its ashame that what was once a great channel being turned into a crap and cheap channel (STV "OWN" programming/imports) it needs to get back to its roots but hell that wont happen unless its freezes over - or expect Sean Batty to do a programme on that NEXT
