Hi pcuk
I appreciate that the success of DA could not have been predicted BUT when was the last time film and stage actress Maggie Smith appeared in a TV series? That alone should perhaps have made STV think that this just might be a gem. And when episode 1 was shown we did NOT get new Taggart. We got a programme called 'Scot in the Antarctic' with Billy Connolly, made in 1997...... I will never understand why the new Taggart did not begin the same time as DA - but deciding to blow the dust off an old travel programme and expect viewers to watch it when a heavily advertised drama was being shown in the rest of the UK was wishful thinking at its best.... And of course all the dropped shows are DRAMA. The soaps and the reality rubbish remains - STV would not dare touch them - but when it comes to drama they feel they can ditch established shows with no fear of a backlash. If Taggart is the only programme in the STV drama stable then heaven help them. With Robbie now in Corrie I doubt any more will be made..... |

Didn't someone say we STV sufferers - sorry! - viewers were getting the latest 'Midsomer Murders' in early August?
Quick look at the schedules and there is no sign - not even on ITV2/3/4. Any further news? |

![]() I will agree with you on that but I already seen them screw STV and their cock ups!Ok they may have had stick from public but all of this really should have been on at time of broadcast of ITV1 - IF programmes "fail" with STV - its STV to BLAME not ITV1 and oh look tomorrow "the chase" is on STV! ![]() ![]() let me guess its the NEW SERIES showing on ITV1 and NOT previous series (that have never been broadcast except ONE WEEKS worth) Is it just me but the way STV advertise things for programmes seem "tacky"? ie "downton abbey" narrator rambled on about "upstairs downstairs" if advertising it just make it short and cut the crap

I just hope series 2 goes out at the same time as the rest of the UK...... (saw 'Charlie Wilson's War' on ITV3 - it is quite enjoyable and has a great cast!) |

You can only get so much egg on your face before you can't get any more to stick! Even at STV. |

that Chase is a ITV1 repeat.
So according to STV its "new" since all we got was "the hour" during the time "the chase" and "dinner date" was shown at time of broadcasting with ITV1 so I guess give ITV1 a clap of showing it for us in scotland (freeview viewers especially) Also I watched that "underbelly" what the biggest cack I have ever watched in my entire life - Glad I have been watching "homes from hell 2011" over on ITV Player on PS3 |

So - three programmes that had 'no relevance in Scotland' now make an appearance! The timing is nonsense, of course, Doc Martin often has adult content as has Downton - both are certificate 12 on the dvd.
Still, a Sunday afternoon might be a good time for DA - and at least they have bitten the bullet and agreed to show it. I just hope series 2 goes out at the same time as the rest of the UK...... (saw 'Charlie Wilson's War' on ITV3 - it is quite enjoyable and has a great cast!) or they reshow "the bill" from where they took off (doubt it of course) still shows that if STV are providing "alternatives" its failed ... oh well where is the "surrender flag" when you need one?

I saw one of the promotions for Downton Abbey on STV last night, I could not help remembering all the things they said about how irrelevant it was to Scottish viewers as I listened to the hype!

Yes, you have to laugh.
![]() Of course, they will argue that they had no way of knowing how popular it would be - but I think the track record of the writer (Julian Fellows) and the presence of the wonderful Dame Maggie Smith would be a BIT of a clue..... But then "costume drama does not do well in Scotland. Viewers prefer grittier drama". They won't do well if you fail to show them. And the gritty Underbelly is dying a death. And who can forget the screening of 'Fitz' - one of the first opt outs. They would have been wiser to reshow Cracker.... |

I think the experiment was worthwhile. I tend to subscribe to the concept that most people in Scotland would rather watch The Football Years than some of the dramas, but the success of Downton Abbey, and the anger of the opinion-forming audience it attracts, was a fatal blow. With the agreement with ITV PLC, I can see STV reversing quite a bit now. A shame as far as I can see, as STV was at least trying to provide a different option and had an obligation to consider life beyond ITV PLC in the network, but I can see why people were angry. |

I thought that myself! regarding DA did STV think it was a documentary? i thought on post before thats what they thought viewers prefer "grittier" drama - oh yes and what is that "taggart" ??? - STV get over yourselves also if its an all star cast on a drama how stupid can you be? regarding the argument for interests of scotland give me a break - i rather hit benidorm than view scotland from above and in a drift! ![]()

The big problem for STV was that we do not live in a vacuum and were ALL TOO AWARE of what we were missing. Advert after advert for new drama or a new series of an established drama would appear in Scottish papers, bill boards and listings mags.
Unless they blocked the advertisements on TV and made good use of scissors on every single newspaper, not to mention unplugging the internet, STV had no way of preventing their viewers from realising they were being cheated of quality series they would previously have enjoyed. No wonder we were not amused. |

That was always the problem - drama went - and was replaced by a look at how bonny Scotland is from a variety of angles - and weather conditions - and futile searches for 'Greatest Scot' etc. All, essentially, CHEAP programmes. The audience knew this - as did the advertisers. |

I think it is almost impossible to compare viewer choices, pcuk - I know of no one who watched 'The Football Years' but I imagine that the audience for a sport based clip show would be different from that for a costume or detective drama of the gentle sort (Midsomer, Lewis etc)?
