Comment: The STV schedulers mess up again - this week there's no sign of CORNWALL WITH CAROLINE QUENTIN, and after starting on Sunday (15th) STV drop POMS IN PARADISE.

And their bizarre decision to screen the BENIDORM QUIZ on Sunday (15th) when they don't even screen BENIDORM seems even more amateurish as they have chosen NOT to repeat the Christmas Special (ITV Saturday night)!!

MrSirs I told you all Cornwall will be Fortnightly (pending on footy) ... yes how is the STV viewer meant to follow a series ORIGINALLY broadcast on ITV1 weekly is now fortnightly ... shambles! .... STV dont even screen Benidorm and not even TOWIE the Big Quiz has less relevance to STV programming than anything else ... like I mentioned before is that programme taken off ITV2? .... STV really have LOST the plot on scheduling now

What do people expect this is meant to be a GREAT channel MrSirs remember .... its GREAT for all the WRONG reasons I think ... guess STV have ran out of ideas "regionally" on what to show since they know people are FED UP of constant repeats of "scotland revealed" "vet school bites" and any other random programme STV now fit in for 10 mins at the weekends (sorry from thurs nights) so ITV2 is the NEW resource for programming .... imagine STV showing TOWIE in place of something that would be a laugh altogether

The best they can do? It's not exactly good that ITV are showing Millionaire repeats at 8pm Tuesday, but 9pm Monday, one of the weeks best slots?


And there are repeats at 11pm two days where these shows could go. 11pm isn't ideal, but it's what ITV1 Wales and UTV do. And it's what ITVplc would do if they were running STV. Either that, or just don't show the programmes in the first place

Exactly! Millionaire on Tuesday ITV ain't ideal, but as you say - 9pm on a Monday That just smacks of lazy scheduling.

Have to agree re Cornwall & Poms In Paradise - if the show isn't going to run consecutively over its series why bother showing it? What's the point of chopping and changing and slotting it in all over the place? Looking at the OPT OUT schedule there are several nights where they could be shown just before The Nightshift (meaning a later start for yes that high quality programme that just can't be trimmed in length ).

Sadly clips from the awful Hour are regurgitaded on the equally repulsive Nightshift - that programme is as appealing as a dog's turd.It is absolute and utter kack - full of dated clips of "celebrities" and Scottish worthies of bygone years - DREADFUL. STV you are utterly pathetic.

Indeed, Nightshift is nothing more than a cheap and nasty method of STV claiming that they are broadcasting local programming. A daft voice-over over vintage video footage should not count as local programming but sadly it probably does.

Laugh at it thought DATED ... all the interviews are PAST their SELL BY DATE .... who really wants to hear MEchelle and Stephen speak to someone like Taio Cruz when "the hour" started? .... use that as an example (i missed it) but possibly speak about his FIRST album and he already has a THIRD album out ... so in reality its totally IRRELEVANT about what the interview is about! ... the programme itself IS the biggest waste of AIRTIME on TV .... heck as was mentioned earlier at least the BBC channels you have news OR closes CH4 has programming CH5 has casino but starts programming after 4am! ... ITV has the zone etc BUT are able to show films during the night at weekend (during week debatable) but STV after 12am thurs-sun closes shop until 5.30am with "nightshift" and PLUS if you throw in some SKY channels that run during the night I reckon I would not touch STV these nights with the barge pole but oh look you got BBC CH4 (CH5 possible/ITV) or sky .... I would choose my option of ch4 or anything alternative than listen to some "glasweigan" speak about how their day is and see "bonnie scotland" from STV's "SKY"copter

So let me get this straight.

You're all complaining that STV is using the Nightshift - off-peak and replacing the likes of Challenge Jackpot on the network - to count as local programming, so they don't need to produce any in peak-time. (and we don't know that's actually the case)

But then when they do introduce local programming into peak-time, replacing network programming, you then complain?

Define Local programming PCUK ... sure as hell STV North is wiped off the face of the earth ... nothing LOCAL about it .... apart from STV News at 6 which is a shambles .... heck I would rather have a testcard in place of nightshift .... Have you not watched the latest "offerings" STV gave us "weatherwatch with batty" or how about missing dramas or the shambles of the "cornwall" programme ....

What STV has done/doing is actually treating its viewers as "second class" not "first class" no matter what they put on .... no wonder I hear on TV alot that Scotland gets called a "foreign country"

If the hopes of many people on here came true and ITV1 bought them out, even the STV News at 6 would be Scotland-wide and the likes of Scotland Tonight would disappear immediately.

I'm not saying STV is perfect - and God knows the likes of Scottish Passport and Weatherwatch were complete parochial own-goals which played into the hands of people who seem to have some psychotic hatred of the station. But just be careful what you wish for.

I don't think there is alot of people out there got "hopes" for ITV1 to take over STV (you seem to think thats what we all want and IS NOT but look at it from my point of view in the old Grampian area - we are not catered for from STV nothing is made in Grampian other than NEWS everything else STV blurbs out is from Glasgow but by all means it is nowhere CLOSE to local telly and I am sorry to disappoint you there!) .... I think people on here wish STV was better managed than it is now .... They may as well put my STV News at 6 from Glasgow as I seem to hear their is always "faults" no matter the day of the week never mind the month!

No channel is perfect we all know but why "revive" scottish passport and do something about the weather .... all ideas that have been done before ... just recycled ideas ... I am still waiting on what Drama STV have actually put on in place of the missed ones (and I actually mean homegrown ones not bought in etc) so to answer that question is a simple no. We don't "hate" STV but if you look at in the bigger picture you do see a lot of difference if you to compare STV to other channels out there (include ITV if you want...).....sorry LITTLE difference STV is to its competitors

Scottish Passport and Weatherwatch - accepted. If they're going to do regional programming they should have a bit more originality to pick up viewers.

However, don't hold your breath waiting for new, expensive Scottish dramas. This is a service with a relatively small population base competing against far bigger rivals that can make economies of scale. It is no longer the 'licence to print money' it was in the analogue era.

Basically, here are your options:
* A smaller-scale STV which operates like an old-style ITV station, albeit over two regions rather than one, free to opt-out of programmes as it sees fit but producing local news and other Scottish-wide programming.
* ITV1 Scotland full network programming, but one nationwide programme from Glasgow - almost certainly including the Border region - and bare minimum Scottish programming.

Your first option actually seems to describe thats the state STV is actually in .... in that option they may as well just get rid of "us" in the north then (does not surprise me the least)

your second option I would rather have BUT if ITV can make "documentaries" to follow ie "cornwall" then I'm for that as well barely see STV making these sort of "documentaries" regarding "bare minimum scottish programming" STV has done very little on "scottishness" really - Albums,Scot, Scotland Revealed ..... STV dont care really about Scotland it says it does but if it did spend more money on them then!!

Surprised as you mention "dont expect expensive dramas" ... already knew that they already bought dramas on the cheap and haven't made any NEW dramas since the demise of "taggart" (sorry "rebus") ... STV is meant to be a big company is it not .... I thought its "licence to print money" was its slogan?? .... but yet company that makes "profits" manages to do it all on the cheap .... wonder where these "profits" actually go then if not into programming ... makes you think??

"Licence to print money" was a slightly unfortunate remark from its owner many decades ago, when it pretty much did have a licence to print money. When there was absolutely no commercial competition, and if you wanted to advertise on TV you had to go to them. Things have changed dramatically, and the profits are far lower than they used to be.

As for where its profits go ... a far more complicated question than you allude to. I would assume it has debts and other costs to deal with. Otherwise ... well surely its profits should in part go to its shareholders? It is a commercial company after all. Any programme it makes would have to pay its way. They could take a risk and produce extravagant local dramas, but if they were ratings flops, if they failed to sell them on to international broadcasters, or even if they just made losses, I'm sure the shareholders would have something to say about it.

Don't get me wrong, there is a legitimate case for preferring ITV1 in Scotland. The channel has got its act together in recent years. But you could wave goodbye to local news from the north, and any Scottish content outwith the bare minimum. On balance, I'd prefer it the way it is.

I will agree with you on this point - but still does not excuse the way STV has taken its "loyal" viewers for a ride and to come out with "new" dramas which really are 3 years old or so to STV is just bull .... I have not read anywhere that STV have opened up and said "we were wrong" but then again they don't apologise really when it comes down to STV News the example of an "apology" was "the gremlins are at work" ... would be alot easier then to switch us to Glasgow then... Regarding what you say about "wave goodbye to local news from the north....." STV Central really don't give a damn about us seriously .... If STV was better "networked" then I could understand it all but its not that way at all .... its always STV North getting the brunt of STV's "shake up" ... like I mentioned before I wouldn't be at all surprised if North goes ... as its pathetic to watch and like what was mentioned earlier it took 6 months for us in North to get new graphics etc .... but you can't tell me even if it was a "trial run" for West Coast/Central Belt to get it first then why leave us in the North ... if its meant to be "talking" to one another surely you expect the rest of Scotland be treated the same surely?? .... Its like to me STV already has created its "divisions" of Scotland .... and its more like the West Coast has far more priority than anywhere else in Scotland ... Sorry but it seems like STV themselves are doing the work already of "losing" the viewers and no wonder people as far as I have spoken to prefer ITV1 to STV. As they find the channel as nothing more than shambolic and treating its viewers like idiots.....but like I say time and time again work it out for yourself and you will be more surprised at what you find out!

Also I wouldn't mind knowing how much STV have saved since they no longer pay the actors for "re-runs" ie ITV3 ... I know that ITV is now doing (discusssed earlier in this thread or thread before) but if STV was to do "new" dramas from Scotland would STV be willing to pay them or would they do it again and fob it off to ITV?? ... seems to me in that sense STV don't really care about its scottish actors/actresses etc but have to leave to ITV to do their work .... To me this just shows how little STV does care

If you think this debate/thread is as simple as that let me remind you of how our "national broadcaster" treats its viewers:-

It broadcasts a turgid, cheap and frankly embarassing programme called Nightshift - why bother, but wait - STV are fulfilling their quota.

Its "local programming into peak time" has on the whole been awful - you've already given 2 examples yourself - the list is woeful - The Hour (scrapped), Weatherwatch (making cheap use of weather forecaster), Scotland's Greatest... (old clips and talking heads sat round a table), Scottish Passport (resurrected - why? It wasn't bad first time round - this time it's amateurish), Too Good To Waste (oh please - Chick Young talking about his waste for an hour....).

Non local programming in peak time has shown how much STV has treated its viewers with disdain - Love/Hate, Underbelly - cheap Aussie or Irish tat...

And let's not forget how pathetic STV have performed in their "not relevant to Scotland" debacle in the last 2/3 years - and it's still going on! The carry on with Downton and Doc Martin - and still no Benidorm, Whitechapel, Law & Order UK, Scott & Bailey....

Let's also throw in the amateur scheduling - Poms In Paradise on 1 week then disappears, Cornwall on and off the last few weeks, showing a Benidorm quiz but they don't show Benidorm! The list of amateur dealings goes on and on...

Let's also remember the regular "technical" mistakes - with no apology, or the playing of Petula Clark's Downtown over trailers for Downton, or Billy Joel's We Didn't Start The Fire over a clip of the Glasgow Airport attack, or the muzak over Lorraine for a full hour with no apology....

So this is not just about a Nightshift/programme content in peaktime debate - it's a whole thread on the woeful performance of a national broadcaster that is sadly a pale shadow of its former self .

Right then.

The Nightshift - why is this such an issue? It's broadcast at dead-o-clock when STV can't sell any advertising - where is the incentive to produce high-quality programming for that time of night? Surely it's better than what ITV1 often puts on - QVC and Challenge Jackpot? It's also gained a bit of a cult following with quite a few people. I don't mind it actually, and my girlfriend loves it, so it's a matter of personal taste. Personally if I ran STV I wouldn't show it, but that's simply because I don't think they should be wasting money on that time of night.

Local programming - It's not all been terrible. I actually liked Scotland's Greatest Albums, albeit I felt it was more of a Channel 4 programme than a mainstream Channel 3 broadcast. The Hour version 1, while not to my taste, picked up a decent following and was one hour a day of STV produced programming - an expense they didn't need to pay for. I'll admit some of the more recent efforts have been poor though. The budget is necessarily low but a bit of originality could result in better programming.

The networked programming I've addressed - you either allow them to behave like an old-style ITV company, with the option of dropping shows they don't want to use, and enjoy the fact there's more Scottish programming, or you go for an ITV1 solution but have very little Scottish news (and no local news). That's the price you pay for having an autonomous network.

Technical mistakes - you guys in the north can tell me how frequent they are, I've seen very few in the central belt and saw very few when I lived in Aberdeen for a bit. I know STV North recent adopted the new set, titles, and a new way of dealing with the opt half way through the programming, so there could be teething problems? I refuse to believe they're any worse than the nightmares BBC Scotland had (and occasionally still have) in their live local programming.

In my opinion STV does more than it has to in terms of Scottish programming, and I actually prefer STV News to Reporting Scotland. I appreciate it's not perfect but I prefer it to the alternative. I understand the concerns, but again - careful what you wish for.

The Nightshift - Whilst I agree there is very little incentive to produce high quality programming to screen during the night, I cannot understand why other channels can repeat shows and even Channel 4 has a half decent night time line up. If they can do it it's time the ITV network (incl. STV) did the same. As for the prog. itself - each to their own but IMO it ranks as one of the worst examples of programming I have ever seen - amateurish crap.

Local programming - Again, each to their own. The Hour v2 was a ratings disaster - and as for the presenters in peaktime - oh dear - Tam Cowan & Michelle McManus - come on! I am glad to hear you accept recent efforts have been poor!

Networked programming - Your option has not worked - infact this route they have taken has backfired on them and made them look like idiots - the option of "dropping shows they don't want to use and enjoying the fact there's more Scottish programming" - complete failure! Why? Because the shows they have dropped - Whitechapel, Law & Order UK, Benidorm, Midsomer Murders etc.. etc.. should NOT have been dropped in the first place and we have NOT enjoyed more Scottish programming in their place - by your own admission we have (in the main) had to endure turgid cheap local alternatives, or cheap Aussie or Irish tat!

We would not be having this debate if STV had stuck with the ratings credible ITV networked programmes, produced acceptable quality Scottish fare to be screened off peak (after 10.30pm or weekends), refrained from screening cheap Aussie/irish tat, and communicated with customers/viewers - i live in the Central belt and I can tell you I have seen the gaffs and mistakes, and they are cringeworthy - there is no effective PR (can we get a news release from STV to let us know IF and WHEN Midsomer/Whiechapel/Benidorm/Scott & Bailey/ law and Order UK etc..etc.. will come on air???!!!)

Will we get a PR media release from them to tell us when the next Poms In Paradise will be shown, or Cornwall (if at all?)

Will we get an explanation of why they saw fit to screen a Benidorm quiz when they have stopped screening the show itself???

Will we get an explanation from them why they didn't screen a recent drama starring SCOTTISH actor Gregor Fisher???

Be careful what we wish for? I wish to goodness STV would act like a professional national broadcaster, and not like a two bob outfit with no sense of obligation to its customers/viewers!

I think people are failing to realise what STV really does for Scotland it does NOTHING for me in my area and I am in the STV North area aka the old Grampian area ... so what is made where I am .... STV News at 6 (plus split for Dundee) << should be back to the way it was BEFORE this muck up (but I see EDINBURGH/GLASGOW have their OWN so why do us lot need a SPLIT - STV should revise it back for us .... but like I say no chance in hell STV North is already a sinking ship!

STV "homegrown" programming - lets be honest they are shavings off a barrel and if you compare it to the likes of ITV's "cornwall" and "the dales" .... they are well more interesting to hear stories about ... what does STV make "weatherwatch" (should really nicknamed it sean batty's weather adventures) and the pretty poor programming so far .... no wonder people switch off from STV

Nightshift - don't get me started on that .... lets just say be better sticking on your LOCAL radio station or your radio than listen to someone speak how their week is going and asking viewers what they up to (if its down to ad revenue I fail to see why it comes to that CH4 and other networks run programming during the night or CLOSE)

Missing programmes/scheduling - Benidorm/NEW Midsomer murders etc - the scheduling of Midsomer recently is shambolics ... STV have shown TWO new episodes out of the LAST TWO NEW SERIES but what does STV do?? - go back to the JOHN NETTLES episodes - sorry but I am lost why play "dodge the bullet" with Midsomer and other programming "cornwall" etc .... thats not really scheduling thats shambolic and a disgrace plus if you think OUTSIDE the box - how would the viewers REALLY FEEL regarding the missing programming (if no SKY no INTERNET) I am sure pretty naffed as I for one am GLAD I can catch Benidorm etc on PS3.

Geoblock? -- supposedly STV's new idea that us in SCOTLAND will not be able to view what ITV has .... sorry but why RESTRICT viewers on variety? If viewers are turning in the droves to ITV STV must be running scared here and possibly the viewers are dropping like flies - sorry but if this DOES happen I'll do my damndest that I keep my ITVPlayer on my PS3 as I am sure as hell not waiting on missing programmes turn up 3 years later .... Fair points Mr Sirs. The only thing I can say - without coming up with the same arguments - is that I see many people from across the UK on here complaining that the ITV network is all the same these days, there's nothing regional, etc etc, and then people from up here complaining that the ITV network is regional and they're opting out of too many programmes. Decades ago ITV stations would not take huge programmes at random, and yet this is heralded by many as the golden era. If we're going to have STV it has to have the option of choosing what it shows on its own station, even if we disagree with many of its choices. Otherwise, it may as well be ITV1 Scotland.

Now Kezo ... am I right in saying you're suggesting the opt-outs for the north should be scrapped? If so I would tend to agree. It does seem to be causing more trouble than its worth and the area is too geographically large to split in two and have relevant local news for both sections. I remember being in Aberdeen and getting news from Shetland instead of Dundee, which was far closer to home. At the same time population wise it's not justifiable to have three areas. Back to one I reckon.

You make a point about local radio stations - they ain't local after 7pm at night (10pm for MFR). If you're listening to Tay, Northsound, MFR etc then they're coming from Clydebank, near Glasgow. It's no more local than the Nightshift. They're just more clever at hiding at. As for other stations, everyone keeps quoting Channel 4 here but ITV1 has gambling and shopping, the BBC hands to a rolling news channel which would be on air anyway and Channel 5 goes to Casino programming.

I would imagine anyway that this whole discussion will become increasingly irrelevant soon. STV now has a deal in which it pays a fixed fee for all network programming. Therefore there is no incentive - aside from maintaining a high enough proportion of Scottish programming to differentiate itself from ITV1 ahead of the future of the network being considered by OFCOM/independence - to drop popular programmes. I would imagine it's just trying to find the slots to now crowbar them all in.

My points to your reply --- STV News yes that is EXACTLY what I mean (the way North Tonight ran before) as the "split" is becoming more USELESS by the day plus the "dundee" bulletin aint as "professional" looking as it is compared to "aberdeen" - Dundee's bulletin sticks out like a sore thumb and should be scrapped and reverted back originally or the way of saying it - the way news is broadcast on the West coast/Central belt ... by the way STV North is not HD either

Regarding radio - I actually listen to heatradio on DAB and beats the crap out of listening to my local stations and if I chose to listen I wouldn't listen to stations mentioned ie Tay I would listen to Wave 102 ... where that station seems to be nearly presenter free - and is enjoyable.... I have listened to Tay FM after 7pm don't like it but there goes also local after 7pm that way but Wave 102 Dundee is ONLY the local station that runs (dont know media group there in but its not Bauer) - I listen to Party Heat right through til 1am on friday and saturdays (days nightshift is on) and is well better NO TALK!

If its all about money with STV - they do need to treat its viewers and programmes respectfully but with the delaying of programmes they are causing more problems for their viewers and themselves .... they really may as well at this point give up and let ITV do the job .... its pathetic really ... I mostly speak to OAP's and there is a growing anger on STV - if they expect to see something they are left to go "where is it" - lucky enough if they HAVE sky/virgin you have to guide them where to go ... sorry but come on if "Grampian" "Scottish" was your main source for ITV and you telling OAP's how to get ITV1 who is really losing the battle - STV not ITV

If STV own programming was to be very different I would tune in more but it just screams "cheap" I have lost faith in what I knew about this channel ... no wonder if I see programmes like "the dales" that ITV bring out its more enjoyable to watch where as STV makes you want to go .... oh here we go again or better yet they may as well go play "frogger"! ... This is why I mentioned also ages ago using "the hour" as an example why did STV North not have different presenters to STV Central? ... answer I got was "tough" live with it or "why should they?" sorry but if STV is meant to act like a) regional and b) local .... STV needs to get its finger out and produce alot more programming to cater us in North but like I say STV couldn't give a toss about us in the Grampian area never mind the viewers in general...
