I've been reminiscing in the pop scene around the turn of the millenium lately, watched a couple of S Club 7 videos and the memories literally came flooding back. Since last night, they've been on my brain and I just need a medium to release it on. Would you buy into my theory that Paul Cattermole's huge weight gain greatly damaged the image of the 'brand'? He was the pin-up boy of the group, we're talking Justin Timberlake hot around the 'L.A.7' period. The 'brand' was a lot more than just their music - the Simon Fuller masterminded TV show played an instrumental part in establishing their success. They had criminal exposure compared to everyone else. Take a look at the music videos 'Bring it all back', 'Reach', 'Natural' - cheesier than a pound of cheddar but sexy and exciting to your typical teenybopper. Then in 2001 when the 'Hollywood7' period started they were suddenly no longer the heart-throbbing hotties that they were a year previous. It wasn't just Paul to be fair, although he was the pin-up - Jo who was reasonably good-looking at the time also put on weight, Hannah got a terrible boyish haircut and Bradley (formerly an innocent looking baldie) grew his hair to look like an intimidating 'gangsta-rapper' which also damaged their squeaky-clean image (aided by the cannabis debacle) in the pop world where looks are EVERYTHING. They had a couple of hits after 'Never Had a Dream Come Through', but I felt they went on for another couple of years on reputation alone.

Thoughts?

Are you actually being serious? There wasn't a grain of talent among them. They've even admitted to being shite themselves.

Whaaaa Seriously? Got a link to that?

Say what you like about them, but some people out there liked their music and they were hugely successful.

I loved them, but then I was only 8 when Bring It All Back came out. I found out about them in Woolworths of all places - Bring It All Back was playing, I thought it was catchy and mum asked a staff member could we have a CD of the song they were playing. I was a fan after that and I have all their singles and albums (I've got the singles on cassette) and I had a couple of their shows on VHS. My dad said I was the right age for their music. Thankfully I have better taste now (or I like to think I do )

Lol what? Paul's weight gain didn't have anything to do with it.

Like most things, the drugs did though!

I think the OP has a point. S Club 7 appealed to a younger market and popstars have to be easy on the eye to that age group.

All pop bands of that type have a very short shelf life, because young fans grow up so quickly.

Also they benefited from a well received Kids TV show in the early days, which got them a lot of exposure.

They were a good pop act and had a few classic pop hits

As I said above I think they appealed to the "tween" (8-12) market.

I definitely think there's a point there. I also think they went for the classic mistake of trying to make themselves more edgy, when it was clear their market was always going to be the kids. (I was completely their target audience back in the day, and I hated their later songs)

Their downfall was that pop cheesy groups don't last for that long Usually till the next big thing comes walking around. But I still love them though.

Their downfall wasn't because of Jo or Paul putting on weight . The main fact is that the fans just grew up and S Club 7 was no longer 'cool'. Also the fact that they tried to go down the more r'n'b route towards the end of their career. If they stuck to the cheesey pop stuff they might of stayed around a bit longer imo.

I still love them though and i really wish the old tv shows would come out on dvd because i no longer have a video player

I think I know what the 'S' from S Club 7 means but I don't like to swear.

Hannah Spearitt came from Gorleston in Norfolk, which is where Myleene Klass came from too. I wonder what is it about the seaside town of Gorleston and manufactured pop bands?

Edit - sorry Hannah came from Great Yarmouth which is just north of Gorleston. Not that I blame her or Myleene for wanting to escape that hellish part of the Norfolk coast.

Exactly. Younger. They appealed to a market that probably wouldn't have been buying their own music. Therefore band gets involved in drugs scandal = parents don't buy. I was an S Club fan btw.

Jo's racism, Paul's weight gain and Tina's potato face have hindered a potential comeback.

Rachel, Hannah & Jon have had quite succesful individual careers (Rachel as a soloist/ on Strictly, Hannah as an actress and Jon in musical theatre)

I loved S Club 7 from when I was about 8/9. Really loved them til their last album, wasn't really loving it like the previous ones but was a fan nonetheless. Still listen to their old tunes now

Paul was the "pin up boy", "Justin Timberlake hot"...?

When?!

I don't remember that.

The post your referring to said that Jo's racism has hindered any potential comeback, they never said that was the reason for SC7's downfall.

i was 12 when they first started, but i was no fan, and if the band were aimed at the preteen market, which is mentioned in a previous post, then i mostly certainly was too old!

strangely enough, i have heard of/do know a couple of their songs, such "Never Had A Dream Come True", "S Club Party", "Bring It All Back" and "Reach". don't know why?

but trying to come back as a trio doing Uni gigs, you've had your time and plus Jo's racism on Celb. Big Brother didn't help either. am i right in thinking that Jo got hit by a bottle by a hostile crowd who weren't v. pleased to see them when they were performing in Bradford?

That was on their Seeing Double album. Wasn't that album based on a movie of the same name they did?

Hence why I attached the words "hindered attempts at a comeback" after I wrote about Jo's racism.
