Chip shop fish, tasted funny?
My husband and I have just had fish and chips from our local chippy. We ended up swapping our portions of fish because mine had a weird sort of taste to it that tasted a bit like how gas smells. So he had it and ate it.
He says if it was off they'd have known at the chippy cos it would have smelled, and definitely would have stunk when they were frying it, and he's so sure that it was fine that he ate it all. I've never known fish taste like that before, do you think it was off and will make him ill? |

I guess is it tasted slightly like ammonia ? Then it has gone off, I'm afraid.

If only your fish tasted funny, then chances are it was off. The other thing being, not everybody's taste buds are the same, so while you detected a strange taste, he might not have been able to. |

Has he started vomiting yet?
I asked for haddock once and there was a lot of muttering and a piece of haddock was duly wrapped up. When I was eating it I thought it tasted "fishy" (but not in a good way). I was in bed with food poisoning for three days. |

Haha
![]() THREE DAYS?! No he hasn't started vomiting yet, doesn't it take about 8 hours? Or is it faster with bad fish? |

I'm not sure how prevalent this is becoming, but I have read and heard of chip shops substituting River Cobbler *baulks* for cod.

Not too fussed what type of fish it was as long as it hasn't poisoned him! Still, we'll find out one way or another at some point in the night. Major sense of dread and worry now though

In my experience, if fish has the amonia (bleach) smell you know about it long before it reaches your mouth. |

Well that's heartening to hear, that's what he was getting at I think, that he'd really have known without doubt if something was wrong with it.

That has to be better than the alternative. Ask Jimi Hendrix.

Unless they specify cod I'd never buy 'fish' from a chippy. |
