Ten years ago today, on the 17th of July, Aaliyah's third, self-titled album was released. People said it changed the Urban music world and was one of the best albums of 2001.

What did you all think?

And it still sounds so fresh. No urban artist has produced such a flawless r'n'b' album ever since and it's yet to be topped.A truly iconic album.
('What If' is still my favorite song on the album)

Hard to believe If you listen to any of her songs now they still sound as good as they did then. If she was alive I'd say she'd be doing well in the charts.

Ever since she died, I've been thinking about what she could have achieved if she was alive.Would she end up like Usher (peak in the 4th album, then big decline in every aspect and then selling out) or would she be like MJ/Janet (going strong and keep delivering iconic videos and performances)??

I've never actually listened to it, but think I'll go Youtube some of her songs from it.

She was a very talented young artist though, she had so much to give. Such a shame her life ended so young and when she was about to achieve great things musically.

I loved Aaliyah, and Try Again is one of my favourite songs ever. I still remember when I found out she had passed. I was 9 years old and on holiday with my grandparents and I flicked on Teletext and it said in big letters "R'N'B STAR AALIYAH KILLED IN PLANE CRASH". It was horrible, and it felt like I just got punched in the chest.

So sad to think she passed so soon after her album came out, an album which (despite being her third) really felt like the birth of a truly interesting and beautiful artist. She was also just starting to conquer films as well. She could have been a huge superstar, and leaves behind so many great songs that still sound so current and fresh.

I'm hoping the upcoming 10th anniversary will revitalize interest in her short career, I would love for her to chart again, or see some articles written about her in the mainstream press. Such a talented and seemingly lovely woman.

Don't Know What to Tell Ya remains one of my favourite RnB songs of all time.

It's a very good, timeless album which still sounds so fresh and new.

IMO, Aaliyah paved the way for such artists like Beyonce (as she died during Beyonce was in DC), Ciara, Rihanna and Ashanti.

But with Aaliyah, like another poster said, I have no idea whether she would have had a setback or a decline, or sold out, or if she would have kepy climbing to MJ standard. With material like she had, she could have been the most iconic female artist ever and be the 21st centuries MJ.

Aaliyah was at her peak when RnB was at its peak late 90s/early 00s era

RnB pretty much sucks nowadays

Such a fantastic album from such a seemingly lovely, talented girl. I was devastated when she died, I think she would have become a superstar.

A lot of it (eg Rihanna) is more pop than RnB really. I'm not saying I dislike acts like Rihanna though (quite a few of her singles are good) but I just don't know why her music would be classed as RnB.

That's what great - how many of her songs are deemed so good. This album was amazing but I loved her in her AANBAN era - e.g. At Your Best (You Are Love) as well.
