We have two in our area, the lowbrow one plays Popeye the Sailor Man....

The other Mendelssohn : Spring Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mz5Rtx-Eu0 albeit a horrid door chime version of, as opposed to the full orchestral version...

Were you violated by an ice cream man as a child?

not that I can recall, no.

I think it's from when I was a kid, playing in the outhouse of my nan's council house and it's all dark, quite, a bit scary and full of cobwebs, then you'd here that jingle in the far distance, it's almost like the musical score to that environment - if that makes any sense.

Fantastic topic Gneiss. I associate Greensleaves with ice cream vans, but I am not sure if that is from childhood in the 60s or later. I had a scour around Youtube for a Greensleaves jingle and while there are a few there, none use the upbeat tempo (double time?) version I recall.

EDIT: Apparently I am spelling Greensleeves incorrectly. Never too old

I did find this rather eccentric jingle though - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0Wv_dmNxqY. Only an Englishman....

Back to present day, we have two come around nowadays and one plays the theme tune to Match of the Day!

The second van that comes around uses Teddy Bears Picnic as its jingle and it creeps me out every time, so I know exactly where you are coming from.

EDIT#2: I took far too long trying to track down Greensleeves, I see from crazy's post this jingle isn't uncommon.

Congratulations on a great thread topic, Gneiss - it's worthy of Danny Baker (that's meant as a compliment, by the way).

I am also a little creeped out by ice cream tunes, possibly it does go back to something weird in my childhood.

One of my friends (not a close friend, more occasional) went missing when she was about 8 and was found murdered, it was quite a high profile case at the time, the early '60s. She was last seen buying an ice cream and as there were a lot around at the time, our local ice cream man, who we called Ramona (the name on his van) told our parents that he had been questioned by the police but completely cleared. I was always a bit wary of any of them after that.

On a lighter note, a few years later we had another ice cream man, known as Rossi, who told us that his son was in a band and was about to release a single. He got me their autographs before they were famous and which I still have, his son was Francis Rossi and they were Status Quo!

Back to the jingles, our local one these days has a tune that is very familiar, but I can't name it!

Could you hum it for us

Is it used in any ads/films/TV shows?
