Rhianna
Why does she seem to go so overboard with the provocative stuff?
She really does not need to as her songs are in the main catchy and memorable. It's actually putting me off her as she just comes across as cheap and trashy She does have a lot of young fans and I think her act is too risque. I was (and still am) a huge Madonna fan but i was very much put off her in her sex era. If artists have good music, why do they need to go for the sensationalist, shock factor? Anyone agree, disagree? |

I don't really know which camp I fall in when it comes to Rihanna.
There will always be a part of me which says she's 23, she's an adult so she can do as she pleases. As far as I'm aware, she isn't aimed at children. Teenagers, maybe but not children. I can't remember the last time she appeared on a children's program or a children's magazine. She's on teenage magazines all the time though (Bliss, CosmoGirl (if they exist anymore)) Surely it is the parents' job to stop their children watching things they deem inappropriate (They can set parental controls on the TV and the internet). That way, children wouldn't be able to see videos for songs such as S&M and Man Down. Surely for children to go her shows, her parents have to buy tickets. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "no under 16" rule or something. If the parents ignore that, then that's up to them. Having said that, even though I'm a 19 year old fan, I do find it a little uncomfortable watching some of her performances now. I get the impression now that she is trying too hard to shock people. |

I used to like her more when she wasn't trying overly hard to be sexual. And I'm tired of her always using the line that Chris Brown beating her "changed" her, its like yeah we know the assault was a major turning point in your life/image, but could you please just tone it down a bit? She's coming across a bit desparate now.

She is "cheap and trashy"... she used sex to sell her songs.

I like her evolution from her 1st to the 4th album (her best to date), but Loud didn't do it for me, it sounded like a step back. Her back catalogue is IMMENSE, even though she can't sing OR dance OR perform OR write music OR be creative.I have deduced that when her label is in charge, I'm indifferent about her, but when she takes the lead (Rated R's first 2 singles and Loud's last 2 singles), I like her.But I still think that, although her career is undeniably interesting, her being in the industry is a disgrace

As much as I love Rihanna, I feel that this whole Loud era was a shock tactic to keep her relevant...I think the label are scared that she can be replaced at any one time by newer artists, and are desperately trying to keep her at the top...
After the amazing Rated R, which was ruined by all the wrong singles being released, Loud is actually a surprisingly poor album...although many of the tracks are catchy, there is only one theme throughout the whole album: SEX SEX SEX... I actually don't think there is one song that isn't about sex on this album...from the opening track to the last, it almost seems like they are going out of the way to portray her as a sex kitten...and unfortunately it doesn't work... She used to be sexy in a classy way, but now she's gone from suggestive to slutty, and it just seems very insincere and fake...she says things like this one day, and then this the next... She needs to be very careful where she is going, as the 'slut' tag is very hard to get off once you've put it on, and as much as I love her as an artist, it feels like she's just selling out in a big way...

Anyone agree, disagree? Becuase they want to be noticed and it's a sad fact that women artists (or their record companies) often sell their bodies better than they sell their songs- wow that's cynical... Look at Beyonce with all that girl empowering chat and the clothes she wears, ditto with the spice girls etc. it's a sad fact women artists are rarely viewed for their musical ability you rarely get female singers who aren't conventionally attractive and if you do it's a kind of niche thing look at the Beth Diotto, Magic Numbers etc. there always marketed as if they achieved against all odds , ie. being older, less attractive or fatter, which is utterly stupid. And then if women do act sexy they get called a slut they can't really win. |

I think her lyrics are disgusting. When you hear kids singing along with whether a man can get it up etc etc etc .
I don't know why it is allowed and why nobody seems to care?? |

Anyone agree, disagree? Madonna didnt use "sex to sell" she used it to be in control....and therefore it underperformed due to the backlash and the harsh nature of it against the political system. Therefore Erotica, Deeper &Deeper, Rain were criminally not number 1 smashes they should have been and the music was overlooked due to the nature of the book itself. Rated R is more like her Erotica era than her Loud era personally. It is dark, confessional and means something BUT S&M, i feel is the only song sexual on the album and even then it is cheesy and marketable! It isnt seductive like Andy Warhol, it is trashy like John Waters....but good trashy! Just thought it had to be said. Not all female artists use sex to sell, but if u gawt it flaunt it!

Why do you mind Rihanna's sexuality??She's 23 and she's having sex, so she sings songs about sex.And that's who she is.You would be shocked Norah Jones to sing a song called 'No clothes' and I would be also shocked if Rihanna sang a sophisticated song about real love, because her image doesn't suit that.I find the provocative lyrics on her album pretty entertaining (maybe because I'm a guy) and I consider 'Skin' a very slick sex song. And I actually respect her for being tongue-in-cheek and not fronting behind stupid and cliche implications and code language.Put simply, I appreciate that she wants to talk about sex and she goes ahead being straight to the point as opposed to implying it

Its not really about her sexuality though, its more about overkill and trying to be as shocking as possible.
Its just asking whether she is doing this to carry her music and get herself attention. Personally I would not buy her album as the lyrics sound vile whereas the melodies to her songs are quite good to be honest. It just sounds like vulgarity for the sake of it. The equivalent of a blue comedian that tries to hard to shock. |

and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY0pFp5r-OY (Romeo & Juliet) |

It's the fact these songs are bought and aimed for mainly young girls...
