Is Rump Steak from Asda any good ?
Hi all,
I went to my local butchers earlier and they wanted around £14 for 1kg of Rump Steak, but then I noticed that Asda have Rump Steak on offer for £7 per kg was £11.79. Is there anyone who knows if it is worth the money or not ? Many Thanks DJM |

I eat supermarket steak and it's generally good quality. Just make sure you don't get the bright red steak like most people go for.

The bog standard rump probably wont be as good as your butchers (also depends on what you're doing with it).
I would recommend ASDA Extra Special Rib Eye. They are very nice. The ES Sirloin and Rump are too expensive for me though but I would say the Rib Eye are the best of the bunch anyway. |

I've tried Asda's offer and thought it was really good for the money. I went for a pale coloured steak and tenderised it a lot at home. Turned out very nice.

I went to Macro recently (for office stuff) and I saw a very nice looking big chunk of fillet, good colour and some nice marbleing which is rare in fillet. I never normally buy meat there but as it was marked £11.99. I thought what the hell.
So went to the checkout, paid the bill on the company card not really paying attention and it was only when I got home I realised I'd just spent £180 on steak at the companies expense! It was marked per kilo. Stupid me, how could I possibly have thought all that meat was going to be for twelve quid. Still, it is very nice. |

Why not? It's probably the most flavoursome cut.

Maybe i've just experienced rubbish ones, given a choice i'd go for sirloin, never had ribeye. I've not been eating meat for that long and the rump steaks i've had have been chewy

Probably bad ones then. How do you have it cooked?
i'm not sure how long i've cooked them for but they've always been too chewy, whereas the Sirloin steaks i've tried have been delicious and no fear of choking involved. So what would you suggest I do next time? |

I have never had a problem with steaks from any supermarket. Most of what makes steak a bad steak is how someone cooks it. Treat it right and it should be good. Sometimes there is an exception that is just a bad steak and would be tough no matter how you cooked it but they are very few and far between in my experience.

I usually bring them to room temperature, season, rub a bit of oil on then attemp to produce a medium rare steak

I've not tried the Asda one, but bought the Tesco value range rump steak and it was surprisingly good.

Do you rest them before eating? If so, then I would suggest you stop buying cheap meat.
Anyway I was wandering through Tesco looking for some chorizo sausages but they were out, but I mangaged to find some (really) cheap Irish Rump steaks, so I bought one with the intention of making a sandwich when I got in. I prepared one as above and was surprised, it wasn't chewy and I managed to get through it without fear for my life, it was very tender. However, nice as it was, for some reason the whole time I was eating it I did keep thinking about urine

I used to work at Makro and people got the prices wrong all the time. Trying to explain to someone that 5 kilos of steak wasn't a tenner was a daily occurrence...
Mind you, it wasn't as funny as the woman who misread the label on a CCTV kit and thought it was a bargain at 69.99 reduced from 99.99 when it was actually 699.99 reduced from 999.99. She almost had a heart attack at the till when her bill came to over 800.00! |

Hmm, generally I'm not very fond of any supermarket meats, Asda's sausages and burgers were particularly disappointing, I'm not sure about steak but I would recommend the local butchers instead as the meat is probably going to be a lot better.
