New Ofcom licences: Connect, Stream, Vision

New Ofcom licences have been issued for Connect, Stream and Vision. All are listed as data services, and appear to be sub-categorised as follows:

Connect: Lifestyle/Health/Cook/Travel
Stream: Sport
Vision: Foreign Language/Audience

All licenced to Reach TV. Very little clue on their website, which is suggesting they deal with video rather than data.

(Ray did already post this on the Changelog, but what's the fun without pages of endless speculation? )

And their website has now gone, suggesting I stumbled onto something I shouldn't have.

It said something about distributing your content to TVs no longer being expensive, and they had the expertise to make it happen. There was also somebody's mobile number (very professional) and an email address which was different to the one on the licence page, and hence not one I will reproduce here.

It appears to be a new startup as I can't find any other reference to them anywhere.

And the company is based on a ship on the Thames!

http://www.hmspresident.com/business_services.html

Could the bizarre world of DTT be getting more bizarre?

and is Reach TV on HMS President linked to the following, moored elsewhere on the Thames: http://www.companiesintheuk.co.uk/ltd/reach-tv

Potential LCN places...

Most likely with no reshuffle required - 110, 111, 112

When Mobilizer is removed from EPG, and as Ray Cathode has said on his website, BBC Red Button to move to 100, Mobilizer (or any other Teletext service or even Sky Text) to move to 105 - then the three services would be placed on 106, 107, 108.

Maybe they're hidden video streams? Bandwidth is limited, but there are spare streams on SDN, Arq A - perhaps quarter video streams for each service?
That would place the services on 310, 311, 312.

Can't wait to see what happens and which MUX they'll be placed on - I'll put a punt that they'll be on Arq A or B in post DSO areas only (so not on Mux C or D).

Yes i would like the CBS channel to come to freeview as well as a movie channel. But reading this forum it does not look like this will happen any time soon.

Agreed!
If the old boat is still seaworthy, they could use it to make a not-so-quick getaway!

There's a live TV studio on HMS President. Maybe it's them.

Anyway, if they shake up Freeview like the pirate radio stations shook up radio in the 60s, more power to them. I hope they stay afloat!

These channels have all appeared today on Mux D / Arq B as placeholders for a data service.

LCN110 VISION
LCN111 CONNECT
LCN112 STREAM

These names are too vague and generic, I think they will be renamed when the services launch

110 is probably Reach Fitness TV

and url is www.reach.tv

I thought Mux D / Arq B was completely full with only minimal null packets.

These 3 new data services must be tiny applications - the names suggest possibly internet services on certain devices.
Is that possible?

Pure speculation, but they could be:
VISION could be a YouTube type service,
CONNECT could be a web explorer,
STREAM could be some sort of IPTV.

Looks likely. I have a Humax HD Fox T2 when I disconnect it from the router it displays loading please wait....

When I connect it to the router it displays diffrent graphics with Vision is a new channel launching on Freeview HD soon.

I guess its accessing the internet to do this.

Also managed to get it to display "We cannot find an internet connection" when I unplugged the router again! That confirms it.

Slightly off topic - but where do rights holders/programme makers stand with this form of IPTV?

Say for example, these Vision guys bought the streaming rights to some football matches. Would they just pay for the web streaming rights or would they have to pay for full broadcast rights?

Definatly an Freeview HD only service as when viewed through my TV with an HD tuner only advises that 'not connected to the internet' but when I view through my SD TUTV DTR also advises that 'You do not have a compatible Freeview HD device'
