I Want the Physical Album!
gertrude

I'd be really upset if there comes a time that albums can be bought by downloading only

It's bad enough that singles can only be aquired by the downloading method I want to have the actual album in my hand, with the artwork and information inside.

If HMV were to go, then I really think that will be the nail in the coffin I hope not It would be awful to not be able to have an amble around their store

If we all made a point of buying the album from stores, and avoided downloading, it could make a difference.

Well, then it's down to me and you to save HMV then

If I want the odd song, I download it, but if I want an album, I'll buy it (from HMV mostly). I like having a hard copy of it and I don't like the highstreet just being empty shops dressed up to look like real stores. HMV are pretty much the only shop where you can buy a wide range of CDs, DVDs, Blu rays and games. I don't buy them from supermarkets as I feel they are trying to take over too much and soon town will be nothing more than supermarkets and extensions of supermarkets. Even if it's cheaper to buy an album online (say from Amazon) I won't buy it, the highstreet is dying, which I don't agree with. People will say, times change and move on and things change, but is it really necessary to see the death of the highstreet, big retail chains going and major job loses?

It was sad when Virgin Megastores became Zavvi and then when Zavvi went bust - let's not let the same thing happen to HMV!

You've summed it up completely

The thing is though, there has been some talk of HMV being in trouble

Why can't you buy physicals online?

I absolutely agree.I'm terrified that this time will come soon and then I won't be able to buy physical albums.I want to be able to TOUCH the album and have the photos, the credits, the Thank you's.Even the jewelcases themselves are irreplaceable. An album is not just a single, you can relate to it, it can mean sth to you and it can help you through hard times. It CAN'T just be a file on your computer

I totally agree. I'm still recovering from the loss of CD singles. I hate the thought of downloading full albums. I have a feeling that CD albums will be here for a while yet though. Sales of those haven't gone down *that* much compared to CDs. When that day does come i'll be devastated though.

For me it's not just about buying it from a bricks and mortar shop, it's being able to physically have a rummage through the shelves. It's not the same looking through a list of search results on Amazon.

I like the old school approach with 80% of my music too, I like the feel of a CD (Going slightly off-topic, I'm the same when it comes to books - got to be paper, not digital!) in my hands. And nothing can beat the fun of blaring a CD in the car and having fond memories of enjoying the music with family/friends.

It wouldn't be the end of the physical CD if HMV were to shut, although I agree with you guys that its the best place excluding online where you can get a wide variety of CDs, games, DVDs etc. But at the end of the day I do prefer HMV/online to other stores like Tesco which are more limited in what they offer (at least at my branch they are!).

This move to digital is pretty much inevitable now that across the board most of the time the physical CDs aren't shifting as much as the labels would want them too. More to the pity.

I just wonder if the dark day where we move to digital permanently did come along, would sales really recover though, because we still will have albums leaking online.

I still buy physical albums, much better than having it as a file.

I love going around HMV, rummaging through the shelves to discover something, though mind you, if there's a specific album I want, I'll use Amazon - 99% of the time it works out cheaper and more convenient.

I would tell you the same this time last year, but I had to settle. The music stores in my country are neglected and irrelevant, so I had to start ordering CDs from abroad. It indeed takes away from the process, though.I will never forget the day that the SMALL cassette/cd/lp store in my neighbourhood.

Now, I've replaced this with walking to the post to get the package from Amazon.

They are in trouble and have closed some stores. The HMV near me isn't closing though (I asked ) and they said it's only the smaller stores that's closing.

Still could be the beginning of the end though We need to keep HMV going though! Let's start a campaign!

I'm the same. I can't remember the last time I downloaded an album. I don't think I ever have. I like to have the physical copy.

I do buy from HMV though I use their website.

I never download an album!

NEVER EVER, makes me feel ill thinking about not owning it physically! I love the CD, being able to put it on Ipod, in car, blast in the house etc. but when it is a file stored away.....kinda takes the point away doesnt it??

but not the wide range of genres/eras that HMV does not just with music, but with films as well. And who says, we should just buy from supermarkets - they're everywhere! and taking over evverywhere, I'm fed up of seeing Tesco (in particular) everywhwere I go. Is there no consumer choice now? Do we all have to go supermarkets for everything? They're pushing the little man out of the street and it's time we stood up to them and said no, we don't want you to take over - we want a varietty of shops!

It's not just about who sells the product, it's also about who produces it.Will the labels have enough budget to manufacture physical albums???

Can I just ask a question; if they get rid of physical releases, does this mean people who do not have credit cards no longer get the privilege of music?

I agree

There are several you tube artists that i like who have released EP's or albums that are only downloads only.
