Torchwood, Episode 1: I have Questions!

Now maybe I'm being thick or maybe we're not supposed to find out why just yet, but a few issues came up in the first episode (I shall number the list for clarity ).

(1.) Why were Rhys & Gwen living in such an isolated rural location? What are they so paranoid of? Surely few - if anybody - ever knew that she worked for Torchwood originally.

(2.) Why on Earth did the Americans want Jack and Gwen killed on the day nobody could die? It's like they're some kind of rogue Al Qaeda terrorist cell. Is it because they think eliminating the remaining Torchwood survivors will end the miracle?

(3.) How come Gwen's parents knew what she used to do? I'm sure they were ret-conned after the wedding and Toshiko was never allowed to contact her mother for as long as she worked there.

(4.) Is it not a departure for a show where nobody can die after the series when everybody died. Still never got over the death of Toshiko and nobody ever made coffee like Ianto!

(5.) Was Rex supposed to be deliberately unsympathetic to the viewer? Given that he was tasked with bringing the team in? Plus there's obvious warmth and empathy from Ms. Drummond and Dr. Juarez (I did get her name right, yes?).

(6.) Captain Jack sure knows how to make an entrance! On both occasions he dropped into Esther and Gwen's lives, they were both nearly shot and blown up. Mind you, I'm sure there's never a dull moment when either John Barrowman or his alter-ego is around!

That's all for the moment, but I'm sure there will be more l8r...

The UK Government wanted the members of Torchwood dead during Children of Earth, that order must have never been repealed, that is why Gwen and Rhys and the baby are living off the grid

Torchwood pretty much destroyed the sitting PM and had blackmail video of everyone in the cabinet. That would be enough to want to eliminate them, I would think.

Sounds like someone (persons unknown) knew that Jack was vulnerable. Perhaps that was the goal. Not to eliminate the miracle, to eliminate people investigating it. Perhaps Jack and his talk of morphic fields was getting a little too close to figuring out the answer.

Toshiko did have access to her family - remember Jack taking her to the train station for her grandfather's birthday in CJH episode? I think that while he had that rule originally once she joined TW it was relaxed after a while.

With Gwen I think given some of the events that occurred (stolen Earth) plus the events of COE, it would have been hard for her to hide what she did, especially given the govt was after her and she went into hiding. Besides, by the time they probably found out, Torchwood was a thing of the past after COE.

Yes, the names are correct. I think Rex is someone you're not supposed to like so that as he evolves over the course of the series you come to like him more. Owen wasn't the most lovable person at first and yet he had his moments as well. I would equate Rex with Owen at the moment.

I'm not so sure that it's the Americans that want Jack & Gwen dead, there appears to be a third party around that don't belong to Torchwood of the FBI/CIA

(Those hillwalkers were nothing to do with Rex)

Iagree. The head of division that Rex worked for had two phones in front of him when the order came to REMOVE (Jack obviously) so he must have had a special phone for whoever/whatever is in charge of the "miracle." A lot of answers to come in future episodes.
