Hi

I have recently been watching doctor who and i think it's a great show! Just one thing how many times can a doctor regenerate?
I get that because he's a doctor he can change his face into a new body and all that but how many times can he do it or can he keep doing it forever??

Also when he glows gold is that just because he's operating on his face or does he have special technology which changes him??

Thanks for reading and i look forward to your answers!!

I suppose Doctors will be there in one form or another as long as the NHS pays them.

I assumed he was a private doctor from the future... the nhs could never pay for the technology or techniques he uses

Hmm, thats a good point, especially with the reforms to the health service. And I hear those time machines aren't cheap either. yes, the evidence does seem to suggest a private doctor.

No, it does seem to me he's a private doctor. I mean, a tweed jacket and bow tie in a NHS hospital?

He is not a doctor, he is the Doctor. It's his name, not his job.

It was previously thought that a Time Lord could regenerate 12 times. Now, we're not so sure.

He's not 'operating on his face'. Regeneration is a natural biological process for Time Lords. There doesn't seem to be any technology involved, though being in or near the TARDIS seems to help the process in some way.

No problem.

No. Twelve regenerations, giving him thirteen lives. His first regeneration led to his second incarnation.

You just fed the Troll.

Ignore him. The doctor is from a future hospital where they use time machines and infecton control is done by self cleaning bow ties.

"The Doctor" is he the head doctor ??

12 times?? how many times has he already done it?

Biological process? does he then have upgraded his body to be able to regenerate??

What is a "time lord"?? do they control how doctors travel in the tardis then?

He gets free upgrades from the future hospital because he works there.

Almost. The time lords are the managers of the doctors hospital.

It is a process any member of his race could undergo.

Time Lords. Alien rulers of the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor's own race, now supposedly extinct.

Why am I answering this? It's a wind-up, right?

Al? If I fall for something like this again, could you ask those future doctors to euthanize me, please?

Dr Who fandom is very split over who/what the Doctor actually is.

Nobodies going to explain to you. Theres a website that will do it, but nobody here has enough time to sensibly explain exactly who/what The Doctor is.

Oh, I understand... He's the Doctor, from the planet Gallifrey. Originally broadcast in 1963, the actor left and so he regenerated into the next (Patrick)... Carried on like that, fights with the Daleks (from Skaro), the Cybermen from Mondas etc.

The Time Lords are a race of people who can regenerate and are the 'Lords of Time' - they were founded by Rassilon, Omega and someone known as 'The Other' who some suspect to be the Doctor.

And then the Time War happened... Most of the Time Lords and Daleks killed - Daleks always return - The Master returned (twice) and then in the End of Time they all returned to try and escape the Time Lock which was placed on the war by the Doctor!

And now the Doctor has fixed the cracks in time, everything's back to normal except Amy's and Rory's daughter (River Song) has been kidnapped and the Doctor's gone to find her!

Simple!
