Would you use these parsnips?

Today I eyeballed a nice curried parsnip soup recipe. Alas, all the supermarkets and fruit and veg shops were closed by the time I got to the shops.

So I bought some from a local convenience store that has a fairly decent fruit and veg section. (usually, I'd never buy fruit or veg from a convenience store but I was really keen to try the recipe)

They came in a cling-wrapped plastic pack, when I opened them they were quite slimy, and there was a fair amount of smelly water within. They seem ok otherwise, albeit some are a little soft and right now they are sitting in a saucepan covered by very salted cold water as I didn't want to hastily throw them out. But I don't know, smelly water and slime (which to me signifies bacteria) ain't very appetising, even if the salted water removes the slime.

Would you use them?

I've done it with carrots. Just make sure you cut away all the soft bits and only have cruncy veg left. Depends how far gone your veg is though.

They seem fine, and in fact the slightly soft ones are perfect for soup.

You were cooking smelly mince earlier!

Do you have a wish to be poisoned?.....

I've had weeks where i've bought stuff but things have happened and the food has been left in the fridge and you feel that you have to use it rather than shotting it.

I chuck veg/fruit in the compost, meat in the freezer or bin it if it's too far gone..

But I hate wasting food..

I know, it's just not my day.

The mince was my fault though, I didn't use it or freeze it quickly enough.

I had the same with a chicken today...only bought it yesterday, shelf life a couple of days, unwrapped it today and it STANK and when I turned it over it was green underneath... I took it back to the co-op and they offered me another chicken which I declined..going to be a while until I eat chicken again.

I find in summer that things go off noticeably quicker, even if kept in the fridge.

I threw them out.

They were Spanish parsnips which apparently don't keep as well as our own.
