Cheese Scones

I love a nice cheese scone, thick with butter. Fruit scones make me heave and I'm not keen on clotted cream or jam for plain ones.

They sell them at the food hall at work, they are definitely nice but by no means special and a bit hard. I bought a pack of 4 of ASDA's own make, and they were burned and completely tasteless. I even made a few myself, but don't have the time or energy to make them regularly.

So, who does the best cheese scones?

My Gran did the best cheese scones ever. She put a touch of english mustard in the mix which always really brings out the cheese not just in scones but cheese sauces as well. Also grated cheese on top before going into the oven, gave them a lovely crunchy topping. I still have her recipe somewhere, unfortunately I can't make scones, they always turn out like rock cakes

A dolop of English mustard (or indeed a pinch or two of the powder) is a must in a cheese sauce, for me.
