I was never a fan of the drunken bakers until a few months back. The two bakers were drinking and a homeless woman offered to *coughs* fellate them for a nip of gin. In the end she fell in a canal and drowned. It was so horrendously bleak i found it hilarious and ive been a fan ever since. There was a similar strip last month about a guy not wearing a shirt at a christening
Along with Drunken Bakers and George Bestial, Farmer and Healy have an incredible knack of getting huge belly laughs out of some of the grimmest situations imaginable. Hen Cabin is positively jolly by comparison. |

Hen Cabin is positively jolly by comparison. Was the Scum Mothers strip the same one where a woman gambles away her mother's savings in an attempt to win enough money to buy a bicycle for her son? The striking thing about Viz is its writers' ability to find real pathos. Does anyone remember a one-off strip called something like Slipknot Squirrel? The character is a teenage squirrel and most of the frames are his dad asking him to turn his music down or tidy his room or asking why he's wearing those dreadful clothes etc. In the last frame, the father is drinking a glass of whisky, weeping over an old photo of him carrying his then-young son, laughing and carefree, on his shoulders at the seaside... |

They are producing the comic equivalent of a Beckett play - Drunken Bakers especially. Some episodes hint at their tragic background - children they've lost touch with - that sort of thing and some of them are very moving.

Then you've got the stuff like We Blight Xmas and We Buy Gold that get even worse when you realise that they are pretty much happening in real life. Farmer and Healy need to start putting this stuff in books. |

you could have scum mothers/drunken bakers in another magazine (like Take a break) with no changes at all and they would be utterly depressing, miserable stories. Whereas in viz they are hilarious

That was Fixed-Odds Betty, bloody heart-rending.

The Fixed-Odds Betty one was very sad really, I suppose because the characters were presented as a lot more sympathetic than they usually are in Viz.
I don't know if it was meant to be the same character, but there was one called My Work-fare Lady, and she did look a lot like the mother in Fixed-Odds Betty. She was on one of those unemployment work programs in a supermarket, and the manager in it was such a prick to her. He makes her wear a uniform saying "Dole scum forced to work" (or similar) and has her unload heavy crates of beans by hand, saying they laid off all the forklift drivers and says "It takes far longer by hand, but so what? We get you free for six months". I really like the We Buy ones with those identical bald businessmen. It's funny how callous, cold and robotic they are to all the people that come in. I've come to really appreciate the Farmer and Healy ones. It's strange, because at one time I didn't like the Drunken Bakers at all, I just didn't really 'get' it, but as time has gone on that and the other Farmer and Healy ones have become one of my favourite parts of the comic. |

Another new one this month, 'Whoops Aisle Apocalypse'. Not quite as intense as some of the others mentioned but still keenly observed.
There's a brutal Drunken Bakers though. |

I don't like the Drunken Bakers and associated scripts. Bleak is easy to do but I just don't find them funny. 8Ace and Tasha Slappa are bleak but also usually funny to go with it.

It ester rantzen, the former that's life presenter and childline founder, who claimed she knew nothing about the rumours about Jimmy. Despite working in the office down the corridor.
Rantzen also appers in this issue in the article where she denies knowing about the giant rat infestation in the BBC.... |

Is it just me or is Archie McBlarter exactly the same joke as Johnny Fartpants?

'Farting Dilemmas with Archie McBlarter' is definitely one of my Viz favourites. It's just so crude and the Geordie accent he says everything with just adds to it. Superb!
