Besides, these would be on the wide beam rather than the spot beam, presumably.
plymouthbloke1974: Not sure exactly which policies - I think it's something to do with the uptime guarantees. Someone else on the forum posted it quite a few months ago, I believe they were a reasonably respected person though I can't remember for sure.
Eurobird 1 was launched in 2001 on a 12-year mission, so it's due to die in about 2013 (though they're probably a bit pessimistic, so it may well last a little longer). However, they have not announced any plans to replace it - usually satellite companies (well, Astra at least, the only other one with which I'm familiar) announce plans many years in advance, and we've heard nothing from Eutelsat. I can only assume this means that they're either not going to replace it (too much competition from SES driving them out maybe, making it more profitable to concentrate at other positions?) or they just keep their plans very secret
