Hi, I've been trying to upgrade my ipod touch to a 4.2 os but it won't let me, instead it comes up with a message saying "Error 3194".

I've tried downgrading to 4.0 and upgrading again, but nothing is working. Even restoring it, it's coming up with the same error!!!

Has anyone else had this problem or knows how to sort this out!?

Many thanks

Do you have the latest version of iTunes?. It should resolve it.

This is the Apple support page for this type of issue. Down near the bottom, the first option for error 3194 is to have the latest itunes, which you do. It then points you back near the top of the page under the "This device is not eligible for the requested build" bit. You may get some joy there.

If it supports iOS 4.0 (the 1st gen iTouch only supports iOS 3.x), then it will also support at least iOS 4.2.1 (the last supported version for the 2nd gen).

Provided you have everything backed-up, I recommend doing a DFU reset of the iTouch, and installing the desired iOS version immediately afterwards. If that doesn't work, then there is either a fault with the firmware you are trying to install, your iTunes installation, or the iPod Touch it is trying to be put onto.

Note that a DFU reset requires a quite specific timed procedure of holding the Power and Home buttons on the device, which if not performed correctly will just result in a normal reset. The DFU reset followed by an iOS installation is a bit like if it was shipped fresh from the factory with that version installed. Instructions on performing a DFU reset can be found online.

Note: I accept no responsibility if things go pants when doing any of the above (I've never had any problems myself though)
