I've always been on and off with getting a iPad but after looking at the new update that's coming, and all these apps with it, i was thinking about getting the iPad 2..however i saw that there might be a iPad 3 coming out later this year..is there any point waiting?

You may as well wait a couple of months and see if another one does come out. As you've probably read, it'll just be an evolution of the iPad 2 if it does indeed come out in the September timeframe (better res screen and cameras). But by then you might as well wait for the refresh in 2012...

They're releasing another next year too?

it's very unlikely a new version of the ipad will come out just six motnhs or so after the relaease of the ipad 2, even if it is the suggested partial upgrade.

Everything you read about Apple on the internet is rumour, unless Steve Jobs stands up on stage and tells you it's fact.

I'm known in my office for being on the ball with new technology and I can't tell you the number of people who tell me the new iphone 5 is out in a month or two and it has a wedge design and will do this and do that. The catch a whiff of one story and take it all as fact.

The only fact is, none of us posting on here will know what is going on before the rest of the world.

Apple tend to announce and release within a couple of weeks of the announcement. Now it usually happens that a location booking by Apple will get leaked. As this hasn't happened yet, I think it would be safe to assume there is nothing coming anytime in the next six weeks (assumi9ng you would need to book a huge conference room a month in advance and then allowing the usual two weeks after for release). This takes us up to September. As soon as IOS 5 is ready to roll there may be another press conference and they may slip in a hardware announcement. However, bare in mind they have already announced IOS 5 and spent an hour showing what they have planned for it, so they may just release it without a major press conference.

At this point in time, it is safe to assume any new hardware being worked on will be the next iphone and not a refresh of a four month old device, which is working perfectly within the realms of the current software and still of a reasonably high spec.

The iphone needs new hardware in order to get the A5 chip into it and bring it inline with the ipad 2 as to what it can do with ios 5 and above.

Apple don't need a new version of the ipad when they can continue to milk the ipad 2 for a whole year and make maximum profit from it for as long as possible. A hardware refresh will damage projected sales of the existing model as people will hold off from buying it.

We can predict Apple well enough to know that if you don't buy their new product on day of release you will always be less than a year away from new hardware coming out and replacing the existing model. You have to take the plunge at some point, and the same goes for any technology. As soon as you lay down your cash for something, a bette spec product will get announced (and you'll want that one even more).

I have an ipad 2 and an iphone 4 (both release date) I am happy with both of them and have no plans to upgrade either until there is a significant and major hardware change that adds something the old tech does not have (not just enhances it with a slightly better screen as is the rumour for the Ipad 2 Pro you must have read).

It's probably worth waiting a month or two to see what is happening with the new iphone, but a new ipad is still 8 months off yet. They also need to squeeze in an Apple TV update between a new iphone and ipad anyway

the latest rumour, as far as i can tell, is that the next iPad will be an addition to the range, rather than a replacement to the current iPad 2.

its main difference being a higher res screen, and likely called something like the iPad HD.

Personally, I would never buy anything that is six moths into a known annual life cycle. I decided I wanted an iphone in December 2009, so waitied (as painful as it was) for the new model to come out at the end of June 2010 as I didn't want to buy old tech that will be out of date. Pretty much the same story for the ipad.

Waiting is tough, if you've held of this long you can't really be that obsessed about getting one and you are talking of waiting even longer still.

You'll get one at some point, its just your decision wheter you go for a 2 or see how long it is until a 3. It's worth pointing out that if an updated screen does happen (which I doubt) and it is an ipad 2 HD, it still means the insides will be the same as an ipad 2 and will become outdated even quicker than the ipad 2 as the ipad 3 will come along in April 2012. If they announce an ipad 2 HD, it wont sell as well as people will just hold off to get a full hardware upgrade with the ipad 3 (and that is what you should be holding out for not a screen update).

Ipad 2 still has 8 months left.

Ipad 3 in April/May 2012.

Forget about the rumoured ipad 2.5.

That's what I recommend anyway.

In its very essence it would have to be a replacement for the ipad 2 if it did come out. Who's going to buy the old model when there is a newer version available for not all that much more money (or maybe even the same price).

Every new product that comes out is an addition to the range.

There will continue to be sales of ipad 2 until the stocks ran out, but there would be no point for apple to manufacture both versions at the same time.

None of these rumours make sense when you really think about the likelyhood and logic behind them. I'm fairly sure a lot of the rumours are started by rivals to try and slow down sales of Apple products and in that time hopefully snag a few customers who get distracted during the wait.

Take all rumours with a pinch of salt. Hope the ones you like the sound of come true, but don't take any of it as fact until Apple announce it.

With the mid price Macbook disappearing it seems to me that there is a hole to be filled sometime soon.

Maybe not this year but next year we should get the iPad with a built in keyboard.
There is no great demand for tablets so its hard to say whether keyboard free iPad demand will hold up.

I would get the iPad 2, it's a great device and you wont regret it.

It's already filled by the base model of the MacBook Air, and as the Airs have sold very well for Apple since they were released, apparently that pretty much killed off the sales of the old white MacBook.

I think I'd dispute your comment about there being no great demand for tablets. There's massive demand for iPads, still, months after their release. Stores in America are still getting queues of people waiting for deliveries. There just doesn't seem to be massive sustained demand for any other tablets. Samsung have done reasonably well with the smaller Galaxy Tab (couple of million units), but all the other companies are shifting in the hundreds of thousands, not in the millions.

It's £850 for a superior competitor to a HP DM1 or a Lenovo S205. (CPU, not graphics)

Something towards £500 is the 'Apple' hole, and useful to expand APP store sales.
With stuff like the Transformer now out, Apple's next gadget could be anything.

Massive demand for tablets? It really depends on the definition of massive. It could be considering 350 million Windows PCs were sold last year.

My point was that you mentioned with the white Macbook gone, and I was simply saying that the base model Macbook Air has effectively replaced it as it's the same price (yes the white plastic computer was £800, which makes no sense to me!)

Massive demand for tablets - ok, it's a subjective term, but anything that gets people queueing in the street week in week out for months and months seems like massive demand to me!

I forgot that Macbook starting prices gradually went up.

There was limited supply of iPads once. Demand was certainly massive in comparison to what was available.

I use mine in replacement for a small laptop as it's very light, has great battery life and is a joy to use for browsing the internet, checking email and using various apps and games.

i agree about taking rumours with a big pinch of salt, but i don't see why it couldn't be an addition to the range, in the same way that there are already different models with different specs.

people might buy the current model, because they don't think the higher spec of a different model is worth an extra £150 or whatever.

either way, i'm waiting for whichever one has a decent camera front and back, a higher res display, and hopefully a 16:9 display. (although i think that might be a long wait.)

I agree in some ways it doesn't make sense (a new one only 6 months after the iPad 2? ), but in other ways it could be justified.

e.g. Cut the price of the iPad 2, and bring in the iPad HD at the iPad 2's current price points. If Apple did that, it'd be game over for their tablet rivals. Why buy a Xoom or Galaxy Tab when you can get a similarly spec'd iPad 2 for £100 less, or get an even better spec'd iPad HD for the same price?

e.g. It would bring the iPad release closer to the more lucrative "holiday season". No longer would some people hold off getting one in the later part of the year because of a new one being due in the Spring.

There are so many rumours about an iPad HD this September... John Gruber, Techcrunch and others, all with "sources" etc. saying they've heard there'll be a new one, that there'll be a "fall surprise", whatever... Other stories with "sources" in the component chain saying Apple's gearing up for a release this year...

Apple will be having an event in September, we know that from previous years when they've used one then to announce a new iPod Touch etc. Given that the iPhone 5 has been delayed past its usual Summer release, it makes sense that that will be released in September instead. But why not release a new iPad too?

However, having bought an iPad 2 in April, I bloody hope there isn't another one this year, whether it's a replacement or a new member of the family!

If Apple did release another one this year, even if it's an addition and not a replacement, I can see it seriously ****ing off a lot of people who've only had an iPad 2 <6 months.

I think it could confuse things too, if an addition, by fragmenting the product line.

And then what happens next year? Would there still be an iPad 3 in March, and if so would it have the "Retina display"? Or would it have the same display as the iPad 2, with an iPad 3HD coming out 6 months later? Two releases per year, or just one?

So much simpler to just stick with one model per year each Spring.

Varies, from quickly going online (Without having to boot up the laptop) to watching Skysports in the garden...but either way really handy bit of kit.

I'm still using the original iPad bought last may. The iPad 2 didn't seem like a massive upgrade to me so its prob worth holding out for the iPad 3.

One thing is that they hold their value extremely well, if you plan on using it mostly at home and buy a good protector case, there's no reason why you shouldn't buy now and sell it for around 2 thirds of purchase price a couple of weeks before the new one comes out.

Not true - there have been two versions of the iPhone available simultaneously - for example, the 3G and the 3GS were both available at the same time for a while.
