Dealbreakers in Music Taste
Not sure if this sort of thread's been done before (probably has!) but are there any artists/bands that you'd consider too hateful to be friends with someone who liked them?
Years ago I got friendly with this woman through our daughters being at the same nursery. She invited me round for a cuppa one morning and I started browsing through her CD racks when she was in the kitchen. She had every album ever made by both Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey. The remainder in the rack were all "Now!" or "Pop Party" compilations. I knew right away I could never be friends with this person! (Disclaimer...this thread is intended to be light-hearted and not condemn anyone for liking different music to me). PS - Boyzone and Westlife are the others that would kill it for me. |

I think you were right in your decision.

In others' subsequent dealings with her, it turned out my instinct was right!!

I don't really care what music other people listen to as music is entirely subjective and based on nothing more than what a mind finds melodically pleasing, not some intrinsic good or bad ~taste.
Having said that, I had a friend who only listened to obscure, underground, commercially unsuccessful artists and took a very smug, hyper-critical and pretentious attitude towards anything mainstream or well-known in what was blatantly a conscious attempt to be unique and individual. I quickly deconstructed their existence and they have now seen the error of their ways and laugh at their former self. If they hadn't succumbed to my influence I could see it being a big problem for our friendship, though! |

So.. I want to know how you told her nicely that you didn't want to be friends?lol
![]() Her daughter turned out to be a mardy little boot and my girl didn't want to be friends with her anymore so it was kind of taken out of my hands, thankfully! |

I wouldn't break friends with someone JUST if they liked the music I hate, or hated the music I love. It's snobbish attitudes I really despise and just can't tolerate. I haven't actually got any close friends with very similar music taste to me, but as long as they don't bash my music, we're cool

It doesn't really bother me. I agree with the poster who mentioned music is subjective. Fortunately not many of my friends sit at my computer and look through my itunes to see what I listen to. However one of them asked me in a boring lecture once to look at my ipod and he said my taste was very varied

I have a friend just like this.

There's a principal teacher at the school I work in. He's a pretentious, patronising fart and scoffs and splutters at any music discussion in the staff room cos he clearly believes his taste to be somehow "better" than anyone else's.

I remember I let it slip that I was a massive Girls Aloud fan and she would use it against me in arguments or as a source of embarrassment at every given opportunity. She hasn't seen the errors of her ways yet (to my knowledge), but this case would be the only case I have (and would again) dumped a friend due to their music taste.
