Lard is bloody fantastic
Especially in Eastern Europe. There's the wonderful Polish smalec, or this great Czech lard with fried onions. It's like a pork pie flavoured spread.
There's bound to be a Polish shop in your town, so pop down there, buy some smalec and spread it on your toast. |

Dripping on toast fed a lot of people for a number of years after the war. I remember it in the late 50's (as a very small child!) but I wasn't keen. Many older people rue the day chippies stopped using lard to cook their chips.

For cooking with I prefer dripping over lard. Lard has a funny smell when heating it. I would say that pork fat is the best over all though (chops, bacon, prosciutto etc.)
