Virgin Roaming or Alternative

Hi guys,

I'm off to the Maldives in a few weeks time and plan on taking my Desire on Virgin with me. I rang customer services today and after trying to explain to the operator that the Maldives isn't in the EU he wasn't able to provide me with any costs. I spent some time online and found the costs of calls and texts etc. Does anyone know what Virgin cost in terms of data while im there? I use my Desire as a wireless hotspot for my Kindle when i'm not in an area covered by Whispernet to download the paper etc.

Does anyone know of any network that is fairly cheap for data? My Desire is unlocked but it'd have to be a pay as you go deal as i'm still in a virgin contract. Oh and just out of interest does anyone know how big in terms of file size books/newspapers are on the kindle?

Thanks
ben

Are you registered on the Virgin website, Maldives is covered, certainly for speech and text costs.

Can't see any reference to data though

If your phone is unlocked youve got a couple of options, you could buy a UK pre paid (Pay as you go ) simcard and add credit to that, doing this will mean that you cant use anything more than you have put on the card.
Ive just got back from Holland, and i bought a Vodafone (UK) pay as you go sim, they charge £2.00 for upto 25mb of data per day, and £5 for the same outside Europe ( ie Maldives)
as its a pay as you go you wont get a nasty bill when you return.

Another option is the local sim, when you get there you will need to buy a pre pay sim from a local operator, although in some countries this is easier than others, however some sims have a data alowance pre loaded.
the only downside to this is that you will have a local phone number whilst away.
and if you really really need a mobile phone, and you need to keep your number, put the pre paid sim in your data phone, and your contract sim in an old non data phone.
and if you want to send messages back and forth, ask people to text you, and reply to them via e-mail.
