Xoom Vs Transformer Vs Galaxy Tab 10.1

Okay everyone, since I accidentally bricked my Vega (hardware related), I need a replacement pad.

So which of the above three would people suggest I go for?

I am leaning towards getting a Transformer as the overclocking potential on it is quite nifty, and it's the cheapest of the three! But there are obviously pros and cons for all.

Let me know what you think from experience!

Mmm. This should be interesting. I've got a Vega too (haven't managed to brick it - yet), and am thinking along similar lines to you.

The Transformer seems to be the best choice for me. I've all but ruled out the Xoom because people say it's difficult to modify, so clearly that's no good to someone who's owned a Vega.

It'll be interesting to hear other people's views.

The Xoom is very easy to modify if you can find a good set of instructions. However, as a Xoom owner I`d go for the Transformer due to the total lack of support from Motorola.

I wouldn`t go for the keyboard thats sold as an optional upgrade as it needs to be clipped onto the tablet and if your connecting your tablet to your TV, its much easier to sit on the sofa with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse rather than getting up all the time to use the keyboard connected to the tablet.

I must say I really enjoyed using mine yesterday. I connected a Wii remote to the Xoom via bluetooth and played Super Mario Kart on my 42 inch TV (using n64oid emulator).

Then I set up Sky Go on my main computer and used Splashtop HD to output it onto my Xoom. It streams video and audio really well. Watched Sky in the office today.... Ipad users just get a This Content Cannot be Displayed when they try that

I am going for the Galaxy Tab as I dont need a memory slot and as I store my stuff in the cloud. Its slim, has an excellent screen and the reviews have been good. I have used a transformer and its fab - with or without the keyboard. This would be my 2nd choice (first choice if onboard connectivity is your criteria - cant remember the last time I used a sd card). The Xoom is one I have not had a play with and I dont know anyone who has bought one therefore cant comment on this one.

Yeah but iPad users can just download the app straight onto the iPad without using other devices

To me, the lack of memory expansion is a good reason to give the wifi Tab a wide berth.
The missing 99 pence feature is done to appease the mobile phone companies, not the user.

Another interesting one is the LG Optimus 3D. It seems a crazy price at near £700 for what is an Advent Vega with 3G and 3D.

If you are anywhere near a Best Buy store it might be worth looking in there as the are including a free case with tablet computers.

When I was looking I chose the Transformer based on price and spec and have not been disappointed so far.

I've had quite a good play with the transformer and its a great device and absolutely get the keyboard. Extra battery life and connectivity make it worthwhile.

Yes, 3.1 (& 3.2) has also been released in various countries around the globe, but not yet in this country. Doesn't stop PC World lying to potential customers though stating it already has 3.1!

I got mine from a Best Buy store they had some in stock even though the web site said it was out of stock. You could always phone and check.

I got a Asus Transformer at the weekend and am delighted with it.

It feels very well made battery life is excellent and if your used to Android is very easy to use. The screen is excellent but is highly reflective. It is very good for watching movies etc.

The Sky Go app is coming I believe, the Sonos app works brilliantly.

I had only ever used the iPad before, which was good, but, like all things Apple just a little too proprietary for my liking.

I just want a device that does what I need/want without having to jailbreak it or whatever it is that people do.

EDIT - I wish I had spent the extra £50 and bought the keyboard/dock - they are £100 if bought separately.

Well, I picked it up from Best Buy earlier on (no free bag though!).

It's a lovely little machine, although I can't wait to get home and get it connected to the wireless Really nice and smooth - I'm glad there's some overhead for overclocking, but at the moment, it doesn't appear to need it. I'll see how Samurai II and Gun Bros work - if they're ok, I think it'll be nippy enough to run at stock.

Got the keyboard package out of curiosity, and I'm really impressed with it - the keyboard's better than any netbook I ever tried.

So if you're going to get one of these - definitely get the keyboard.

I think I would go for Galaxy!

Galaxy tab is much better than the Xoom, The screen is amazing it is the thinnest and lightest out there. The Xoom haz a poor screen in comparison to any of the others and is pretty heavy..

At the moment I can't decide between the Ipad 2 and the Samsung...

The Samsung in B;ack is the one to get though as the white looks and feels poor due to the finish.

xoom has a decent VA screen. Its just that IPS is slightly better for many things.
There are loads of things to consider in usage though.
Would you ever consider a fantastic 800 by 600 quality one versus a 1280 by 800 lesser one?

Samsung claim their Super PLS is the next evolution of IPS and at one time was expected to be on the iPad 2.

I've been happy enough with my Xoom, although I installed the US firmware and have Android 3.2. I'd be pulling my hair out waiting for Moto to support non-US users.
Moto also sent me a free bluetooth mouse and keyboard last week. They said it was an offer for any buyers in July, so I'm guessing sales are suffering.

If I bought another pad, I'd avoid the Xoom, if only because of the farce they call online support. There's hundreds of forum posts on their site asking for an update schedule just to enable the SD card slot. The hardware is good enough though.

Is yours the non 3G?

There certainly looks to be a plot to appease the mobile networks and make expensive 3G versions appealing.
And to be fair, marketing is usually getting the things into the main stores who do the advertising for you.

Wifi only, so a stock US firmware works fine.

I had been looking at getting a Xoom, but the (lack of) support from Motorola has put me off. Swaying between the Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 now. Both seem to have generally had very good reviews - just need to find out the best deals I can get for both, really. One area I'm worried about is compatibility for apps on Honeycomb - will most of the Android 2 things run just fine?

The only problems I've seen have been with 2 games.. a space shooter and Robot Unicorns - they both appear in a tiny box. However, the latest firmware has a zoom function which expands them to the edge of the screen.. doesn't work perfectly though.

Everything else has been fine for me, although I'm sure that there are other apps that have some kind of problem - I'd suggest that they're in the minority.

That's fine. I can't find any big alerts suggesting that barely anything works, so that's no bother. The only trouble now is that it seems there's no 3G model of the Transformer, and I can't find a 3G Galaxy 10.1 - not sure if the 3G Galaxy has actually been released yet. If it has, then it's well hidden!

EDIT: Aha! Seems that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is released here in a few hours. I'll have a skim in work and see what 3G deals I can get.
